I thought you guys and gals might like a look at the latest rifle I received from Gary Goudy. It is a pre-64 Model 70 Action that several guys had a hand in. John Mercer and Steve Billeb barreled the action with a Lothar Walther barrel which I got from Ralf Martini. Shane Thompson did some of the work on the action as well. Gary stocked the rifle with a piece of California English that was over twenty years old when I bought it and I had it another fifteen or more before using it. Haven't shot it yet and won't make it to the range for another couple weeks. Enjoy. Beautiful rifle in an excellent caliber! Well done. Guys, Many thanks for the kind comments on the rifle. I should have also added that the stock blank was very roughly turned by Shane Thompson to his pattern. It was left considerably over-sized due to a lead bullet encapsulated in the stock. It couldn't be seen in the blank, but when Shane cut into it, he found it. It was apparently a .22 rimfire bullet that most likely was shot into the tree many decades ago. I was concerned that it would disqualify the blank and had Shane leave lots of wood. As it turned out, it was no trouble at all. Also, I neglected to mention that the metal finishing work, including the superb rust blue, was done by Bruce Farman

Congrats Tom another wonderful looking rifle from one of the greats; well thought out as per usual. Is the action by chance the one I sold you a few years back?

Handwerk, Sorry for the delay in responding, it's hunting season! I'm not sure on the action. I had one that I got from you, one that I got from Alan Day, and one from a donor rifle I picked up at a gun show specifically to get the action. It was one of those three. Glad you guys like the rifle. I sure do. TT

He is a master..I saw a gun he did and the checkering started out at about 24 LPI and tapered to about 30 LPI...Thats pretty tricky stuff!! I had a 375 in a mod. 66 mauser he did. It was an awesome gun, and the stock work was outstanding..but like most of my good guns it went down the road as soon as I got bored with it...I really liked the mod. 66 but its just not a real Mauser!! What an elegant rifle, and nicely photographed (as always). Pure class. I was curious about what model of Leupold scope you selected. I'm guessing it is a 1.75-6 x 32 VX3, mainly because that's the scope I'd choose for this rifle and cartridge. Also was wondering what the magazine capacity is, maybe I'm not seeing it correctly but I get the impression it is a bit deeper than usual through the magazine area. Hope you have some ambitious hunting plans for this fine rifle!

Does Gary have an email address? I have his street address and phone number, but I am hesitant to call a busy man up during working hours, and snail mail is something I like to avoid if I can. Ray, I was particularly interested in his treatment of a Mauser 66. If you have a photo of the one you once owned, I would love to see it. I have one in 8X68S, with an extra barrel in 7X66SE vom Hofe which I am fond of, but I hate the factory stock design. It looks like a fugitive from the Weatherby factory.

Hi TT, Beautiful piece!!! When are you and Nigel going to break it in proper? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Thanks guys for all the nice comments. Dave - great minds must think alike. The scope is indeed a 1.75-6x32 VX-3. The magazine holds 4 down, but could easily be made to take a fifth. It will almost go now. I didn't even think about it. xausa - Gary does have e-mail. I'll send you a PM with it. Duane - hadn't really noticed. I'll have a look at a blow-up and see if I can detect it. I'll get back with you. Lane - It does need to pop a buff doesn't it. Will Nigel be at DSC? TT

Duane, I took a look at blown up images of the rifle and I couldn't really tell much. Undoubtedly, there will be some impact of the background colors and textures that will show up though. TT

Xausa, Correction made of original post: I did find the pictures of the Gary Goudy mod. 66..but they are 35mm prints and I can't post them, not great on the internet..I will however mail them to you if you will email me your address to ray@atkinsonhunting.com. He did thin it down all over and got rid of that boxy look, and it was a nice feeling rifle. It was a .375 H&H and the mod. 66 is about as smooth as silk and the action is short as most single shots and the switch barrel design is awesome, After using it some, I liked the rifle very much, but like I said, it just wasn't a traditional Mauser and I'm a nostalgic Mauser nut case, so I sold it to James Wayne, a well known Texas gun dealer. He had pictures posted on his web sight at one time. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
