Are there any good, reputable custom builders out there that use actions other than Mauser actions and Remington 700 actions? My issue is this.....I want a rifle that is going to be accurate and well built, but I need to have a bolt throw that is less than a traditional Mauser action. Any suggestions?

I can assure you that Jim Kobe can make a rifle from any action you want.....

Nothing against Jim but I'd wager all the other rifle artists that post here can do so as well.

Are you saying no Remingtons? They have both long and short actions. You will have to have enough bolt throw to pick the cartridge out of the magazine. I think they will have to have more info. Several good smiths on this forum.

Are you talking about an action with 3 or 4 locking lugs to get a short bolt lift or the actual travel of the bolt? Montana Rifle Company makes an action that is sort of a cross between a Mauser and Winchester pre 64 and it comes in long and short models. It'll need some smoothing up for custom applications, but it is a possibility.

I guess "bolt throw" was the wrong wording.....what I meant was I need an action that doesn't require me to lift the bolt handle as high as on the Mauser actions.

And no, I'm not interested in a Remington action of any kind.

Sako.

Three locking lugs:
M995 (or TRG)
M75
M85

You'd be hard pressed to find a better platform to build a custom gun on. MHO, of course.

Yep, the Sako is probably the best answer to your question. I think the Weatherby Mark V might also have the short bolt lift but I don't see many of those on custom rifles.

One might also check the Browning A-Bolt

If you want to build a nice one check out the Bat Machine 3 lug CM receiver.
