I just picked up my Biesen "convertable" last weekend and I am so proud of it I think I want to have a custom oak/leather long case built for it. This was an Al Biesen 7mmRem Mag on a pre-war Model 70 Win. I bought another pre-war action, had it barreled up by Benchmark who copied the original barrel and CnC'd the new barrel(10thousand's over) in 270 Win and Roger Biesen completed it by filing it into the wood and and finishing it identically to the other bbl'd action. I would like to display the rifle as well as the complete Barreled action in the case with tools, etc. Any thoughts on Case makers these days?...other than Huey?? Thanks Much 470EDDY

A while back Duane Wiebe sent me an email about some cases that he was either making or having made. They were really nice. If he isn't doing them, he would know who is.

Marvin has retired and sold the business. I still prefer Jim's work. Very traditional and correct.

While the cases were superb, the builder used some sort of molded plastic material...PERFECT FIT../.the down side is that they weighed in at about 60 lbs!

Thanks so much, Guys!! Great input. I had a flyer around here for a stock/semi-custom builder....for the life of me I can't find it either. I did take a look at the sstock cases on Jeff's Outftters and Galazan...those might work with some fine tuning by Vern Brinkerhoff?? Cheers and All the Best for a Great NEW YEAR!! 470EDDY

I guess every fine gun owner goes through the "Oak and Leather" case routine. All of the above mentioned makers do outstanding work. In my gun room with a fine Single malt Whisky or the tailgate of a truck at the range, they showcase a fine firearm! I'd be willing to bet that none of us would trust our treasure in "Oak and Leather" with a baggage gorillia on a plane with one? If you would, you need to look at this video. Another vote for Jim Wear. Hard to imagine anyone doing better work... He's not going to have a table at DSC with the Guild this year, but said he would likely be in the vicinity of the Heym (new_guy) booth Friday afternoon and Sunday AM. Probably doing other things on Saturday. Didn't ask about any other shows...

I little off the subject...but if you haven't seen the Impact Case..a Kalispell clone...and a damn good one..perfect. I always chose the Kalispell for a rugged no BS gun shipping and protection container. This fills the bill perfectly. Nothing would stop a guy from doing a bang up inside treatment. Even better..it ain't Chinese! USA!

I buy Americase empty hulls of the right dimension and fit them out inside in traditional kit. But truth be told, you get better protection from foam interiors. Quick, Cheap, or Good: Pick Two

There is a casemaker, Kerry Newcomer, in Missoula Mt who makes an excellent gun case. Most of his work is for take down shotguns but he does custom cases so I am sure he would build a rifle case. The fit in his cases is perfect and the liner material is second to none. Hereis a link to Kerry's web site.

470EDDY: I use Americase or SKB for travel, depending on what gun I am carrying. They are both tough and are what I consider the best travel cases on the market and I have tried them all. Americase makes a beautiful case and your quality gun will definitely look good in it. If you just want a nice leather or leather and canvas case for display and carrying in your truck, look at the cases Jeff's Outfitters sells. http://www.jeffsoutfitters.com...ategoryid=51&panel=1 I have these for my English SxS shotguns and they are a lot of case for the money. Jeff is a great guy to deal with.

With all this talk about Americase, BF etc. I think we're getting away from the question Eddy asked about a custom oak/leather case. I didn't take that to mean a solid user case for commercial travel. I've nothing against them - I have four Americases and think I "need" another... Still, there's no way to confuse that kind of case for a high quality custom case that approaches/equals art by a true wood and leather craftsman . Good hunting,

Just a little off topic but I got a S4 Model at the Dallas SCI this past weekend. For taking to the ranch (putting cases in the back seat of truck) or just going out to shoot provides great protection and is just beautiful. Built like a tank for leather. The rifle does not move inside of this when it is zipped--molds to the rifle very well. It is pretty heavy but is just the ticket for my customs.. http://www.murraycustomleather.com/cases.htm
