I have a pre-64 M70 Standard grade in 30-06 that I would like to have a custom stock and reblued.

Any suggestions for a good smith? I understand that not much change will be left from $5,000 or so.

I suggest talking to Dean Zollinger in Rexburg, ID. He could really hook you up well and leave you with a good bit of change from your budget.

There are other excellent and highly talented smiths here on AR but I certainly agree with butchloc's assessment!

As far as the custom stock is concerned, consider Accurate Innovations (see the links in my signature line), their work is simply fabulous.

Nemo's suggestion of Accurate Innovations will likely provide all you could ask for, and bluing by one of their trusted outsources, and leave you a bit of change from your 5K.
Call and ask for "Wes" or "Patrick"

Mr. Kobe built me a 257 on a 09 Argie that I bought from him. I sent him a blank. I was/am very happy with the rifle and will have him do more for me in the future.

The ones that Pete supplied to fit his action.

Kinda turned back the clock on this project..don't do much of the so called "American classic" style anymore, but here's a no-nonsense N. American hunting rifle in 30-06 . As shown, a little under 8.5 lbs.

Perhaps. I do know he builds a fine rifle and I would use him without question.

Beautiful stock work and more interesting is how rings that aren't a full-split profile, got on that Leupold M8?

I recently inquired of Leupold to do just that, for me and they said they couldn't do it.

I'd heard or read that Leupold would, in fact, install non-split rings on their scopes, for their customers, but based on their written response, I was in error.

Does anybody else do this work without compromising the internal environment and/or nullifying Leupold's warranty?

Maybe I am misunderstandng your post. The rings shown are built by the action builder, Pete Grisel. I installed the scope. Leupold had nothing to do with it other than supplying the scope many years ago.

Pete made his ring LOOK like that, it's actually split on the bottom and you just have to bend it open, install the scope and bend it back...yeah...sounds scary, but worked fine

The only problem I had with Pete's rings involved gold borders. Neither the wire, nor the mechanical attachment seemed to particularly enjoy the flexing.

That's a Bowen built 500 Linebaugh. The Nimrod as he calls it. Grips are lacewood.
