What is this action worth in VG condition? What are the pitfalls?(I'm sure its authentic). Any advantage in using this for a build over a VZ24 or Husky? how much weight difference are we talking? Add any value to a better custom build? Thanks

Ok so it's a small ring, with small threads & cuts on the bottom rail to lighten it - right. Advantage over any other Mauser except for having something rather scarce and sought after probably 0. Those actions were the precursors to the Brno 21H action, wght. savings over a large ring probably a few grams at most. Lsst one I saw for sale all tricked out asking $2500. so a ball park guess on an original $500+depends on how badly someone wants one. It would certainly make a very fine custom rifle in the right hands. Post some pics. FWIW --- John303.

John, You miss the point entirely. True, the action's weight is not that much less than a standard 98 but, the small ring allows you to use a barrel that is smaller in diameter which results in an overall trimmer & lighter package than can be achieved using a standard 98. All this while still maintaining proper proportions. Aut vincere aut mori

Excellent answer Mike, you hit the nail right on the head (contrary to me hitting my thumb, like I have been doing of late in my house remodeling).

Due to the breeching of a 98 Mauser you can make any barrel light weight if you are not caught in the shoulder against the receiver face paradigm. Take a look at a GEW 88 barrel. It is small thread and it does not use the receiver face again the shoulder. It is even skinner than most would put on a G33-40 and it is military issue with the same threads.

G33/40....fine basis for a dandy light-slender proportioned 7x57.

Yes, you can, but it looks like shite! That's the point that the uninformed seem to always miss. Anywone can fit a skinny barrel, that's not the hard part. Making it look good is. Aut vincere aut mori

Using a Swede offers the same proportional advantage I believe.

You get the idea. Very nice rifle you have. What's it chambered in? Aut vincere aut mori

It's a 7x57. It was restocked previously (Fred Speiser work) and I find the wood much too fat for the metal. It will be going through a diet program with Dean Zollinger when I get home in March. Jim Wisner did the metal (note the slick G33/40 cut behind the receiver ring) and the orginal wood as well which he told me was a Mannlicher since discarded or??? He advised he built it "many years ago". It has Jim's bottom metal fully drilled for lightening, his front and rear sights, swivel band, 3 position safety and custom bases (front integral with the Q-rib) and quick detach rings capped with a Shilen 22" barrel. The bolt opens, slides and closes like glass, simply amazing. Shoots the 140 gr Accubond very well.

Boxhead, I have been to Atyrau. Seems Aktau is being left behind. What a lovely place. Great looking rifle.
