Many of you folks already know about my feed issues with this new build. In short, the cartridges still get 'tight' on the turn of the bolt and not all rounds get picked up by the extractor and some won't eject. After a bit of research I've noticed that my caliber choice on this project, 6.5 Creedmoor has a wider shoulder (.459 vs .431) and slightly wider rim (.4728 vs .470) and thicker rim (.0539 vs .051) than the 8MM that the donor action was originally machined for. Could the wider or thicker dimensions be part of my problem? The barrel is a new Douglas Premium and chambered to match tolerances via a PT&G reamer. The only thing I've done so far is polish the chamber with .0000 steel wool a bit. Improvement was only marginal. Thanks for looking at my post. CB

If the bolt won't turn down, you might need to ream the chamber deeper or set your sizing die farther down if it is not already touching your shell holder. Or it could be a tight bolt face; you mentioned your brass is bigger than .470. As for feeding; yes, the feed rails on 98s are made for the 8mm taper and you need to grind the receiver feed rails to match the new cartridge taper, or lack of it. That is the reason that sometimes a round will not get picked up by the bolt; it is at the wrong angle; the shoulder is tipping the base down. As for not ejecting, check a round in the bolt face and see if it is snug but not too tight; Mausers are very positive on ejection. If your brass is truly a very tight fit in the bolt face and extractor, might have to open up the face a bit. This is easy to do. That might account for tight closing as well, come to think of it.

There could be a number of things that could contribute to your problem but it would be hard to evaluate without seeing it up close and with some dummy rounds. Might be the extractor, feed rails, chamber opening, etc.

Before I ran the reamer in deeper, I would take a little off the top of a shellbase and see if I could set the shoulder back that way. If it does bump the shoulder just enough, you could then deepen the chamber. if it's not it, all you've done is muck up a $6.00 shellbase.

The above info you posted concurs with what I was assumed was the issues except for the chamber fit which seems to be on point. I will take a closer look at the fit at the bolt face and then start with widening the feed rails slightly as soon as I figure out how to measure my progress. Thanks.

Thanks. I've seen this post numerous times and the first 2 pictures look the same. I can't see where any metal was removed in "the lower quadrant" of the bolt face or extractor. I'd appreciate some clarification here. Since the action is already blued, I had hoped for a non-invasive solution. Looks like the feed rails need work to start. No getting away from this. Thanks for your help. Ray
