Just finished this little monster, the 700 AHR. It is one of my proprietary rounds that Ed Plummer and I came up with about 13 years ago when we were looking for something larger to build than the 600 Overkill. We started with the GMA African Magnum action and worked backwards to design the largest case that would fit in it. The belt diameter is a tad under .750", which is the size of the bolt and the hole through the "C" ring. I use the standard African Magnum action, but John makes me a magazine box with parallel sidewalls so that the interior width is .015" wider than the case. I make a follower and install spring clips to make it a vertical-stack setup. Magazine holds two and you can snap over one in the chamber. Feeds like a dream. The barrel length on this one is 16-1/4" and it weighs 12 lbs fully loaded. Recoil is "stout". I regulated it with 175 grains of H-4350, 1,000 grain Cutting Edge solids and 920 grain Raptors. Velocity out of the little barrel was 1,900 fps. It's incredibly accurate, or I should say consistent, with cloverleafs at 50 yds. Recoil is "stout". I've built somewhere around 20 of these and this will be one of the last, maybe one more. Pacnor isn't making the barrel since their shop fire and brass is getting hard to find anyone to make it. Nothing fancy about this rifle; it's just brutal. A 500 Jeffery sandwich

I was proud to have the 8th 700 AHR built. It is now protecting a Mozambique Banana plantation from marauding Elephants.

Beast is right! 175 grains of H-4350 powder! I'd definitely need a nice thick pad on my shoulder. Any clue of the energy at the muzzle? A fine looking, well built hammer. Life itself is a gift. Live it up if you can.

1000 grains @ 1900 f/s equals a piddling 8017 ft/lb. OK for mice, bit underpowered for anything bigger.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I used to love shooting these big boomers but not anymore. I still shoot them to test function and to regulate the sights, but I do it off of a lead sled now. With a 25 lb bag of lead on the sled, it will lift it off the shooting bench. I still like to build them though. I have two T-Rex's, a 600, a couple 585's, and one more 700 currently in the works.

700 AHR!!..Man...if that one won't give you a flinch, nothing will, but fun toy never the less!! Well done. I find the single stack magazine interesting is it DBM style then close the floorplate on the DBM or do you load it from the top? 2 down? 3 down?

Stuart, You snap them in from the top and it will hold two down, and the extractor will snap over a chambered round for three total. You usually want to stop after the second shot though. Build me an action with an .800" bolt and I'll build something larger.

Wayne, You need to drop your powder charge to 173.5 grains, because at 175 grains for all practical purposes you won't get 40 rounds out a pound powder because there is always some waste...just like you can't get all the mayo out of the jar.
