Here s a barrel I mlled to octagon from round. It's from a stainless steel 1 .25" blank first left round a short distance then a straight octagon section for about 1 1/2" and then a tapered octagon for several inches and to a rear sight island. The barrel terminates in a vent rib secton with the underside again turned to round. This has no welding at all....it's 100% milled from the 1.25" barrel blank. It's only one of two I've done in a lifetime...this one a walking gun in .30-06 and the first a "window" gun in .222

And of course if you're going to this much work it seems one should have some pretty wood to house it.

Now if a "peon" like me can do it, then anyone should be able to do it......right?

OH,,,,BTW....the round section under the vent rib is tapered as well.....

You have way too much time on your hands. Smiler

I admire the effort that goes into something like that.

Dennis Olson of Plains Montana does all my stock routing.

Dandy wood figure vapodog. Was it made out of a 3 piece lamination?

Yes....I've become a believer in the sandwich laminate.....it's quite a bit stronger and allows for more error in the grain pattern.

Since I have quite a bit of home sawed lumber, it also allows for use of the finer boards that previously were not thick enough for a gunstock.

I'm now looking for some other hardwoods....mostly lighter colored with drop dead gorgeous grain on one end.

Saw some incredible figure in a hardwood slab at the local hardwood furniture store. Damned if I could remember the species though. Camera goes along next time.

Is that a custom SS all metal version of a Rem 600 carbine? Wink

Honestly you must be commended for the effort & dedication sir.

I would love to see a rifle like the old Mauser 98 with octagon to round barrels.

Lothar Walther has the octagon option and the shank part can be rounded.

My last post was rushed........point was lams are not my cup of tea, but ya got to give fantastic grain flow credit where it is due. Lots of nice wood out there in smaller thicknesses. The furniture store slabs I mentioned are 2" or under usually.
We now return to our regularly scheduled program.

Speaking of wood, that species of wood (chair and a slab) was already sold at the furniture place. Maybe next time there will be more of it. Neat stuff.

Some wood candy for us nuts. Not gun stock worthy. But, ..............
