I am looking to have my Win 95 converted to a TD. There is a good article on those conversions in latest issue of RIFLE Magazine and pictures of Fred's Takedown systems. Does anyone know of him, his work or contact info?? Is he still doing Custom gun work?

Cheers,

Don't know about Frank, but Fred owns Z-Hat Custom Rifles. He might know.

Larry,
You are correct, it is Fred! Any chance you have telephone number for him? Is he still doing custom rifle work and the Hawk cartridges?

Cheers,

When he was in Casper, and my parents used to live there I'd bump into him from time to time.

He was kind of a pain to deal with for gunsmithing. He barreled my Ruger 77R in 375 Ruger. It shot well. Took about 18 months. Not sure who is to blame. Fred, Dale Story or Cliff.

The three of them had some kind of partnership at the time. Daley Story wanting to retire, Cliff only wanting to do stockwork and Fred doing 90% of the barrel jobs in Casper.

FWIW he is active on twitter. If all else fails you can probably contact him there.

I love Led Zepplin!
Sorry, that's all I can think about when I read his name.

I hope you have better luck than I did. I sent him my BRNO ZKK 602 in .375 H&H to convert to .500 Jeffery. I paid him a healthy deposit up front and progress money, but as time dragged on he stopped responding to my emails and moved to MT without informing me. I only found out about it because his 4D reamer rental moved there, and I assumed one wouldn't go without the other.

It took a number of phone calls to 4D and a visit by a friend in Kalispell to get him off dead center, and I finally got the rifle back, only to discover that he had duplicated the .375 barrel contour with the .500 barrel and the rifle now weighed less than it had originally. I finally gave up and sent the rifle out to Lon Paul and had a proper job done and wrote the Zeglin transaction off to experience.

Thank You'all for the input on Fred contacts. I called the 406/Kalispel number and got a recording for 4D Reamers Rentals...asked for Fred, but also another question on a reamer. No response!

I also ran into several other posts from other forums while trying to find this fellow...and also found some rankled responses on communications and good gunsmithing....

So with that in mind, maybe I don't need a Take Down system as urgently as I had expected....at my age...waiting isn't also a good thing!!

Cheers,

I'm sure there are a couple of posters on this forum that could help you out with the conversion.

Also, you might try Turnbull Manufacturing Turnbull Takedown . Have not used his services yet, but like the things he does. Due to shallow pockets, I've always avoided places that list the price as "call for pricing". Someday, Someday.

SmallCal-

GR8 Idea...in fact I didn't know Turnbull did that kind of work. I am having my Win Mod 95 405 action priced for Color Case....not they were ever done that way....but I am having custom wood done on it in Teddy Roosevelt style....so considering a Turnbull job there .....I am hearing (from my gunsmith) about $400 for action, hammer and lever... and the assurance that the action will NOT be warped...and done in human reasonable time!! Thank you for this tip...that might work out too!!
Cheers,

My little Stevens Favorite was small, but the color case, bluing the barrel, and screws was no more than $400 at Turnbulls.
