Recently Bought a Remington 722 in .257 Roberts
The Barrel cut down to 21 inches, stock refinished , pad added.
Done well enough for field use nothing embarrassing at all.
Going to try it out this weekend, This is the 1st pre 700 remington i have had. I must say i like the action.
What is the general Consensus on theses as a basis for a custom. Mine is smooth nice trigger, Seems like if a guy wanted to build say an 06, look for a 721 long action , Put a good barrel in it, there are tons of choices for a hinged floor plate, and at that point , if you wanted a beautiful wooden stock , or a HS precision, type you would be set. Seems like are real good working mans custom could be made , tons Cheaper than with a Mauser.
You would almost Certainly have something a bunch better than what the factories are producing. I know where there is a 721 in 270 for 300.00. Is this a common practice ? thanks ...tj3006

Not sure they are actually better than todays CNC produced articles but certainly noting wrong with them, so build away.
Yes it is common practice to buy $300 rifles and bust them down for the action. Except for the bolt handle, they look like a 700, bottom metal is junk of course.

yes there is a company here in oregon that makes hinged floor plates and replacement bolts and all sorts of stuff. Pacific machine and tool I think its called.
I guess better is up to the buyer. I like the feel of this one better than most of what i see...tj3006

PTG; Pacific Tool and Gauge; they make reamers and many accessories for rifles of all types. 700 bolts and bottom metal with detach mags; Sako extractors, lots of stuff.

They were and are a fine hunting rifle, the best of the day for a using gun and still about as good as a field using gun can get..you can trick them out I suppose but that would defeat their purpose..The one best 222 I ever owned that wouled shoot with almost any bench rest gun was a Rem 722, its groups are still pinned to my gun room wall...I paid for that gun 10 times over with turkeys, bacon and hams at local turkey shoots, it shot that way out of the box and I never changed a thing. Is the 700 better, well it must be it costs more!! shocker It mostly depends on who you ask..BTW, for that matter I wouldn't even consider using any push feed or for that matter anyting but a Mauser and a pre 64 Win for a custom build..

An afterthought, why mess with a good 257 Robts, as good a caliber as any and better than most...I think every rancher and outfitter in Wyoming has a Rem 722 in 257 robts for his deer and elk rifle, or did at one time..

I've replied before that I have Mike Walker's favorite deer rifle.

Bought it from several years ago, but have not fired it.

It is a 257 Roberts.
