I am looking for some low height telescopic sight mounts. I would like to mount a 42mm object lens scope sight as low as possible to the barrel. The rings need to be detachable, to allow use of back up scope if there is a problem. I am not looking for quick detachable rings set up, switch to open sights in the field, just to be able to switch over to a back up scope. As a first pass, I am considering Conetrol mounts. If you have a picatinny base, LaRue Tactical makes a set of 30mm detachable rings, the LT719. I've never used mine with a 42mm but there's no clearance problems with Leupold VXR 3-9x40 and 4-12x40. I have used Talleys, the old Griffin and Howe side mounts, Pachmeyer swing over mounts, the old-style Warne mounts, the Leupold rings with the stud in the base of the ring, and the Leupold QR rings that go on a Weaver-style base. All have worked well and held zero for me. The lowest were the Warne Mounts for which the old-style QD rings are now hard to find. However, for your purposes, assuming this is for a common rifle, I would suggest low steel Weaver-style bases with the Leupold QR rings. One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. Conetrol mounts are a lot of things. They are attractive, surprisingly strong, and mount fairly low. What they are not is a convenient mount to use when switching scopes. For this purpose, given that you can't use a mount that is too low (42mm objective) I would also choose Weaver style steel base and Leupold QRW rings. With this set-up you can sight in with two scopes and switch them with complete confidence that point-of-impact won't change. Regards, Bill

Phil, For some reason, I'm not able to find my PM's. I think I may have managed to delete everything somehow. It doesn't take much technology to make things totally out of reach for me! Send another and I'll see if that works better. Regards, Bill

I have a couple sets of Talleys. They are fairly reasonable in price, and they really work great. I would opt for QD if I were you, if you need to switch scopes out in the field, you will be glad you did. ISS

Short of Smithson and some old claw mounts, I like Talley QD as well as any..I have one set of old Lenn Brownells that are more or less like talleys and I really like them, but they are all but impossible to find.. One problem that none of todays mount makers address it their bases, most of which are so high the don not leave the receiver clean and low enough for properly mounted iron sights. .Actually the old Weavers give you the best look at low mounted irons and all for about $10 bucks and you can even file out the center to make them even better.. If you are considering Conetrol:1)order NOW!;2)put the 1-800-CONETRO on speed dial!;3)keep multiple copies of payments;4)put a psychiatrist on retainer-you will need him after each weekly tracer call,or5)just get a magnum bottle of an anti-psychotic med;stop taking them when your order arrives.
