Apologies in advance for the poor quality of these photos. The following are two rifles I had built on left hand Zastava Mauser actions. The top rifle is a 300 Win mag (larger objective on the scope) and the bottom rifle is a 9.3x64. The barrels are chrome moly select match pacnors, and the scopes are Kahles. I chose laminated walnut for the locally made stocks because I thought it would travel better (ie move less – hold POI better) than a conventional walnut blank. You can see the distinct layers of laminate in the last few photos. All stock work was done by the late Geoff Slee.

I am pretty happy with the results so far, though haven’t had time to shoot them much since the projects were finished.

Bwana, welcome to AR. You join lots of Aussies on here, including Matt Graham. Nice looking pair...laminated stocks have sure come a long way!

Guys - Thanks for the comments.

John – I sourced most of the parts myself, and the metal work was done by Peter van Meurs (Procal). I liaised directly with Geoff on the stock work, although Peter and Geoff worked pretty closely on rifle projects.

Gorgeous rifles. Did your smith laminate the wood too or did you use another source? I'm interested in using laminated walnut and am looking for a source.

Nice and very practical customs! Well done.

It there a source of laminated walnut in Europe?

Bwana nice rifles, but why do you choose the rare 9,3x64 caliber? What kind of safety is used in your rifles?

I think there is a stronger market for laminated walnut than is currently being supported by suppliers.

In my case, the wood was laminated by my stock maker locally. It was only something he did in limited quantities and I dont know of anyone else who is offering a blank of this type. Certainly based on what Geoff said, he did not get much demand for laminate over a conventional walnut stock, but then again, Geoff preferred a walnut blank to anything else, so maybe he just directed people away from laminate.

I just like the 9.3s. I had a 9.3x62 which I liked a lot. I thought the bigger case would give me more flexibility in what I could do with the rifle. I reload all my ammo, so rarity is not a disadvantage unless I lose my ammo some time on the way to a hunting trip.

Safety is just the standard trigger block on the factory action. I am thinking I should have added an aftermarket safety to the bolt, but didnt source one at the time of the builds, so probably will live with what I have.
