I found one (actually a full rifle that was sportserized). The ring says 1937, for 200 bucks. Should I buy it as the genesis for a custom? I'd love a 300 H&H or a 404 so I'm not sure if they will fit. Thanks gents. jorge

Jorge,
I used mine for a damn nice 9.3x62... it might take a bit of work for the .300 H&H and the .404 Jeff though.

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

The .300 H&H and the .404 will not fit that action without a competent gunsmith's surgery....

Find that smith and it's a fine action for your wants.....and yes....pay the bill.

It will however make a great 9.3 X 62 without any surgery at all!

Never thought about the 9.3 but it's a good suggestion! But the question remains, is it a good action for the project?

I'm just finishing a .425 WR for one of our members here on just such an action. It is an excellent choice for such a project.

Go for it. John built me a nice 375H&H on my VZ-24. All it takes is money.

A lesson in irony

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us... "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony.

I have a VZ 24 action, its in .404 Jeffery, and it has a drop magazine of 5 rounds, so in a pinch its 5+1 if i need it .

good quality reciver and very smooth and nice to operate. I have seen several customs built upon the . VZ, and they have all been nice, 7x57s, 9,3s and some others .

At 200 BUCKS it's a steal...all the VZ-24 actioned rifles I've looked at online and in gunstores run in the past several years well over $350...most of them are in very good condition and it's one of the better mauser actions.

I built a 9.3x63 a few years back...just a barrel change more or less, plus a few hundred for trigger, mounts, shroud, stock etc, and I did all the other work...Lothar Walthers...it will cost you if you can't do the work yourself.

The best thing to do is do an online/forum search for mauser conversions...all the hoohaw is spread thick...

I would leave the long belted mags alone and stick with a standard '06 length case or maybe a Ruger case(there are several that can be used and keep the 3.3" standard VZ-24 mag length and not get into the mag extension grinding) for all the reasons you will find if you do the search, but I don't want to start another mindless whizzing contest...it is YOUR project and YOUR decision to make.

But my recommendation is to buy a commercial DG rifle...you will save yourself a bunch of money and have the shooter in your hands right now, not months or years down the road.

Luck...whichever way you go.

The only problem with buying a "ready made" is the loss of all that wonderfull planing time, the daydreams, the anticipation, the decissions on components, the sneek peeks at the ongoing progress and the interminable wait for the final,in the hand and heart posession of said dream rifle. Sometimes instant gratification is not near as longlasting as something that has your heart in it.
I say go for it and enjoy the madness.
