What Mauser action for a 358 win?

Thinking of building a 358 Winchester and was wondering what action to start with? With the plethora of Mauser actions and me not knowing the difference, what type/caliber/etc should I look for?

My thoughts are to find a good action and have a gunsmith either re-bore or re-barrel it to the caliber.

What should I look for?

Why not a 35 Whelen if you intend to use a Mauser action?

Not an expert by any means but I imagine about any of the Model 98's in good shape would fit your bill.

A quick and easy option would be a commercial FN set up for a 308 or 308 derivative that utilizes a magazine block. You could have it rebarreled or rebored. If you want to go the mil-surp route (and spend more money), an intermediate Mexican or Yugo might be a good choice.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

I used a Yugo 24/47 and it worked great.

I would look for a .358W that's already made.

Recently Ruger made some 77's.

I would favor an action with CRF, a 3 position M70 type safety and a soft recoil pad.

I have hunted with the .358W since 1966. The 99 and Steyr at the bottom in the photo are .358W's.

Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says.

When we go to the doctor they ask us what lens we like!

Do that with your optics.

My .358 Winchester is built on a Portuguese 1937 Oberndorf Mauser action, as is my 6.5X08 (.260 Remington)and .308 Winchester. The standard Mauser magazine allows me to load ammunition to virtually any length I like.

Mine is going on a YUGO 48. Commercial action with a spoonbill handle.

Any intermediate 98 will work just fine. Already mentioned, 24/47, Yugo 48, and there are others.
