I see Sarco is selling these actions for under $300.

Even with my free labor, I can't convert a VZ-24 to this level of readiness.....

Has anyone used one of these?....what's the consensus on these actions.

I have received my action and along with a Kreiger 7mm 8.5 twist barrel blank it's on it's way to being a rifle. I was very favorably impressed with the Sarco action. All functions are good and all it really needs is a good polishing. The current finish is a very dull blue.

Do you know of a source for aright handed action with thumb cut and lever release? Thanks. dave

I believe that thumb cut was put there by a custom rifle builder, as was the lever release.

That's some good thinking. Use a pattern stock and in a caliber everyone could agree on. Make stuff like barrel length and LOP personal. I'd be very interested in being that gunsmith! Thinking pre-war Rigby.
Could even be possible to do a large standard caliber, then a smaller.

I received my Dumoulin action and am in process of building it out. will probably have most of work done as I am not up to any precision work any more. It will really be an economy build. It will be a 7x57 and following is list of parts and cost -

Kreiger sporter weight barrel 8.5 twist $380

Front sight - Red flourescent $ 39

Stock will be fully glassed from tang to forearm
tip to reduce labor cost. Contrasting wood

I much prefer the David Miller/Curt Crum modern american stock style rather than the Rigby English with the abbreviated forearm but then I learned gunsmithing at TSJC and not England and it rubbed off on me. My rifle bibles/picture books are Michael Petrov's 'Custom Gunsmiths of the 20th Century' and Tom Turpin's 'Custom Rifles - Mastery of Wood and Metal'. I've done probably 1/2 dozen of the Boyd Laminates and I like them very much. Haven't gotten a quote on the work as yet but do not believe it can be too outrageous.

Sounds like a winner zimbabwe. So far all I have in hand is the action and mounts. I have a semi inletted english walnut mannlicher stock on order that should be delivered any day now. The blank is pretty plain but straight grained. It should have a classic look to it. I ordered a Lothar Walther pre chambered 7X64 barrel for it but probably won't get it until after Christmas.

Mine is going to be a budget custom too.

Scope mounts? Where to buy?, what would fit?

Well I ran the numbers again twice and once I got $994 and once I got $1229. I never claimed I could run a calculator. It's obvious I can't with any accuracy.

Maybe it's the machine, not the operator.

Like Dick Nickle once told me over coffee at his place in WA~~~"Reboring is an art and you only want to do this when there are no viable alternatives. If you can get a GOOD barrel ---you are most likely better off". However~~~~ I never had a bad barrel from him.

Duane, as always is spot on. The one place not to scrimp is on your barrel. Buy the best you can. Then hope and pray, but it's a lot more likely you'll have good results.

We all have two groove barrels that shoot like a champ, but how many do you have that don't?
