I picked up one of Lon's rifles that Morris Hallowell had on his website. It was somewhat unique in the chambering and wood selection for the stock. Some of you may have seen it, a 9.3x64 stocked in an exhibition piece of Birdseye Maple. Since reading several of our posters experience with the 9.3x64 and always wanting one of Lon's rifles, I jumped on it. I went to Lon's website and sent him an email describing the rifle and asking for a few details about the action, barrel, etc. What a surprise when the phone rang several hours later with Lon on the other end. He spent no less than 45 minutes with me on the history of the build, the components and some loading info. We also strayed off into hunting, favorite calibers and a number of things that two gun nuts might find interesting. All I can say is what a nice guy! He could have blown my email off or sent me a short reply but instead he spent some billable time with me talking about a build he did for someone else. He is a fine fellow and I wouldn't hesitate to use him on a future build! Not to mention, I really like the rifle now in my possession! On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. By an interesting coincidence, I just finished a similar conversation with Lon about a Westley Richards Mauser he has resurrected for me. This is the third job Lon has done on one of my guns, and his workmanship and expertise are exemplary. I will be getting my rifle back some time this week or next and I can hardly wait to take it on the range and later in the hunting field. Here's the "before" picture of the rifle: Here's the "after" photo of the rifle, prior to bluing:

Lon is one of my best friends and when folks ask me how he is doing after the fire I always tell them I am afraid that he will never recover ----- he is still making rifles ! Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com

A switch barrel Rigby that he bought from me to restore was one of the casualties of the fire. Sad :-(

I had three Oberndorf commercial Mauser actions in the fire, two of them Rigby slant box, stepped receiver ring. I still don't know if they can be rescued. I also lost an original Rigby stock for the slant box action. Insured, but it's pretty hard to establish a value on such things.

Lon is a good friend of mine also. Just got off the phone with him actually. He can talk guns for hours and loves to do just that. I lost a 375 Dakota in the fire but with a little of this and that Lon has made me whole. The lawyers told him to not worry about ones who lost guns in the fire but Lon is not that kind of guy. I know a lot of custom gun makers and I can tell you from experience, you cannot find a more trustworthy maker, or friend, or guy, within this industry, or any other, than Lon Paul. He's the best. For the record, I've heard him talk highly, in the past, of that rifle you bought.....he really likes it.
