What caliber fits?

I inherited a pretty nice Enfield, all the metal work has been done. It is a 338 RUM, a caliber I have no need for...Based on the bolt face and rail work, what would be the best caliber to rebarrel to? I am thinking perhaps the 404 Jefferys might feed and function and I am checking that out as we speak, but if not I would want to go to one of the big 50s..Which of the 50s is the most practical for components etc. and most likely to feed in a RUM railed action..

I am in the process of building a 458 African which is based on a 404 jeffery case. I already have the reamer and headstamped brass is available.

I also found this thread on a 404/500

Ray,

There's also the 460 G&A and the Vincent's long and short.

The 404 Jeffery conversion from that 338 RUM should be just a rebarrel. That would be a nice step up and make a nice Enfield. Just depends how much money and trouble you want to put into this project.

p.s. the boltface will probably have to be opened up a bit to accomodate the jeffery case.

+1 for the 404 Jeff. If you are insistent on a 500 than I would go with the 500 MDM.

Well, I pulled the barrel and it feeds the 404s like poop thru a goose, and I have a Lothar Walthar 404 barrel, so that is what I'll probably go with..

funny thing is it fed 300 H&H, 375 and 416 Rem as well and all fit the the bolt face apparently as the all had a purchase. I was surprised the 404 fit the bolt face as well as the other 3 calibers.must be pretty close.
