Cousin thought I would better appreciate a rifle his dad built. So he gave it to me.......
It is a .458 Winchester Magnum, built on; here's what it says on the action: Mauser Modelo Argentino 1909 Deutsche Waffen-und MunitionsFrabriken Berlin Number appears to be L 2472
What am I the new owner of? Is this action any good? Is it strong, and long enough for a .458 Win Mag?
We ran the transaction thru an FFL to keep it legal.
Found some unprimed Winchester Brass kinda cheap. Am going to load up some mild loads for me, and some "slap you around" loads for the big son.....IF you fellas condone a 1909 458.
Any comments will be appreciated. Hopefully my niece will help with photo's this weekend.......Grant.

Grant, a 1909 Argentine action is one of the most sought-after actions for a custom build. Others more knowledgeable in gunsmithing can chime in as to why, but some of the finest customs I've seen were on 1909 Argies....nice grab! :-)

I saw one of these that Harry Creighton built in the 1970's, using a rebored military barrel. It was very light, too light for my taste in such a heavy caliber.

I wouldn't be afraid of this action with a 458Win but don't listen to me cause I will shoot it myself just to find out if it isn't! I believe if they refit SMLE's to fire 45/70Govs that Arg ought to be fine in 458Win.

ClaMar, there is no such thing as too light of rifle! I will carry as light of rifle as I can afford cause when I shoot it at game I don't hardly realize it discharged.

Grant,

Can you post photos of it? Sounds like it is a good rifle and the 1909 action is highly regarded for custom builds. The 458 is a fairly typical conversion on that action as it is relatively easy to do compared to some other big bore calibers.

If you can get some photos posted, that would help us give you a better idea of what you have.
The thing with Mausers is that a majority of custom builds maintain at least some of the original markings on the action, in your case the "Mauser Modelo Argentino 1909 Deutsche Waffen-und Munitions Frabriken Berlin," so it wont go very far in helping us tell you if you've got a nice rifle or a nice rifle.

As I said, I am sure you've got a great rifle, but you may have a true gem and not even know it.
