Which intermediate Yugo 98 action is preferred for nice custom rifles? I am sure some of you might want to say none of them, but I'm curious.

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

That would be my choice too.

The 48's, while darn near new, are rough and less precise.

The early FN/Yugo M24's, are excellent. I have handled a number and built a few and they have excellent fit and finish.

The one with the early crest.... I can take a picture if need be.

Thanks for the offer, but I've seen them on the net before. Thanks for the info!

That is a very neat action. Looks like its going for real money. Can't afford it now, but thanks for the heads up. Based on advice gleaned here, I think I'll try for an FN M24 Yugo when the time comes. I like the striper clip slot and thumb hole knotch found on pre-war sporting rifles, and I'll likely do an open sights only rifle. I'll either do a Mauser type "M" copy in a medium bore, or an early Rigby style 275 HV (but with Oberndorf commercial style guard bow) with diopter peep. I've been driving Z1R nuts discussing the possibilities.

Yes, that action did not go cheap.

You might use a Mexican Mauser and replicate something like this, a very rare Rigby variation: SmallRingRigby

Might as well go all out and get this one:
Type A Mauser

That gun looks wrong. I think it might have been pieced together.

Mauser did make a special action for Rigby for the 303 British with a special magazine to handle the rimmed cartridges. It is pictured in:

http://www.amazon.com/Mauser-J...-Speed/dp/0889352305

Now out of print, expect to pay $300 for a mint copy.

Ouside of nostalgia, is there any reason to spend a ton of money on sporterizing a military action as long as Cooper, CZ and Kimber are in business.

I'd say hard to make a nicer 505 Gibbs than this for the same $ CZ will sell you one !

I used a Yugo M24/47 for a custom a few years back. I thought it was interesting that it was through hardened rather than cased. This was just based on the way it drilled, but it was defititly not a hard surface and soft core. I have had no setback after several hundred .243 Win rounds. Also, it feeds perfectly with no rail modification. YMMV
