Gents:

I have a Winchester M70 Classic stainless (CRF) action that began life as a 30/06. After someone who was suppose to turn it into a 404 Jeff a few moons ago...and all they did in 14 months was remove the barrel....I am going to have a different rifle made with this action.
I would love any input as to quality rifle makers either here in Florida or the southeast. I am looking to have it made into a 6.5/06 with a 26" barrel and a simple composite stock appropriately bedded. Action truing, etc. would be obviously needed.
While not in a HUGE hurry, I would expect something this simple to take maybe 3-4 months tops?
I would appreciate anyone you all may be familiar with so I can contact them as I'm ready to go.

Thanks so much!!!!

Gary

Doesnt sound like you need a true custom maker but a smith who will "put together" what you want. Don Geraci a BR HOFer is our local goto guy&will guarantee HE can shoot 3/8" 3shot groups with the completed gun.Only under 30 cal though-he HATES recoil!

From what I've heard a million times over the past several yearns here on A.R., Jim Kobe has a sterling reputation and doesn't mess around. Ship it to him and be done with it.

OP,
Some barrels are available now but others have a 6 month wait. I guess it depends on who's barrel you want on your new 6.5-06.

Jim is the best I have used.

I sent him a fluted barrel off of a 700 to fit to an OM 70. A 460 G&A (think 458 RUM). He had to turn down the shank and recut the threads, the rework the barrel timing to preserve the barrel markings at 11 oclock and reclaim a pretty "Bubba'ed Up" receiver top with a few extra holes. He tig'ed them shut, drilled new ones, and fitted a set of custom bases to take Talley QD rings. Did the work to a factory 30-06 action to make it feed those fat RUM cases flawlessly.

He just does great metal work at a fair price and short turnaround time, all things considered.

5-star rating!

GarBy,
Good luck with your project.
I just received word that my 35 Whelen and 6.5-06 that Dwight Scott did for me are ready to be picked up.
Awesome cartridge, terrific choice of bullets, a true magnum without the fuss.

Kobe has done several jobs for me. Turns them in a quick manner and is reasonable.
