Now the wait starts. I sent off two Charles Daly left handed mini Mauser actions to Pacnor yesterday. One will be a 17 Remington, 24 inch, 10 twist, number 2 contour. I have a nice walnut pre inlet stock from Chris at Walnut Grove for this one. The other is going to be a 6mmx222, 24 inch, 12 twist, number 1 contour. It will be shooting 85 grain and under bullets. It will go to MPI for one of their stocks. Both rifles will be primarily fur hunting/calling rifles. Haven't decided how to scope them yet. Possibly Leupold 6x compacts but not sure yet what I'm going to do for optics. I'll keep everyone posted as these projects develop. Mart "...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." If you learned how to fit them yourself, you would not have to wait. It is not that hard.

Don't have a lathe. I can do the wood work and I can do some engine lathe work but not skilled enough to tackle fitting a barrel. Mart "...I advise the gun. I'm on the slope for two weeks right now but will post a picture of the stock when I get home. Chris was great to deal with. I haven't ordered the MPI stock yet. I am going to have them stock it for me. Mart "...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Mart, If you ever want to shoot the 30gr. 17 caliber bullets......I'd change the twist to a 9 inch. Pac-Nor also makes a very nice 3 groove, 9.0" twist barrel. edit: The 25gr. VMax bullet may also be a problem. Just some 2 cents.... Kevin

Kevin, I plan to stick with the Hornady 25 grain HP for the most part. I had great luck with that bullet when I had my last 17. I haven't had any luck finding any 30 grain bullets from Berger or other suppliers. I didn't see them listed on their web site anywhere. Did they discontinue their 30 grain offering? I'll bet a nickel the 25gr won't shoot well in that 10"t. Adam ______________________ Ammo, you always need more.

I'm rethinking the 10 twist in the 17. Think I'll have them change it to a 9. I'm going to shoot 25 grain bullets for the most part and will try some 30 grain if I can find them. Not likely to be using the 20 grainers much. Mart "...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Mart, Good call. Decades ago the 10" twist was widely considered the "standard".....heck, I even have an old A&M barrel that measures at an 11.0" twist. These days the 9" is the "go to" twist. Even Remington had switched to it, years ago. The 9" twist will handle everything up to 30gr. just fine. BUT......keep the barrel reasonably clean. Here's a pic of my Sako single-shot 17-222 PD rifle. It uses a Pac-Nor Super Match 3 groove, 9" twist barrel. So far I've shot Hornady 25VMax and Kindler 27BT through it. I've also built a 40XBR 17 Javelina using the same barrel specs. Friend Of The 17 Kevin

I took the advise of several and had both barrels twisted tighter. The 17 will be 9 inch and the 6mmx222 will be 10 inch. Mart "...I advise the gun.
