I have a Remington model 700 BDL in .375 RUM. at 7.5lbs i think the gun is too light for the .375 RUM cartridge and i would at least like to get a new stock fitted to the model 700 action and maybe some more stuff done to it. What are some good places that will rebuild a model 700 for me?

Hey Pez
What do you hope to do with the rifle?
Are we talking about a better recoil pad and a Mercury recoil reducer or a bunch of specialized custom features?
Someone will be here to help if you give more details.
Good luck with your project.

black bear hunting is mainly what i plan on using this rifle for and maybe the bigger brown bear and other big game in Alaska and maybe even Africa if i get the chance. but i definately want to be able to do a whole lot of black bear hunting with it here in my own state. it definately needs anew recoil pad instead of the 1 inch thick hard pad it has now. I'd really like a new stock for it, something abit heavier and probably made from nice walnut with maple accents if i could get it that way. i want a new barrel as well instead of the very thin barrel it has now.

I had Pac-Nor rebarrel a brand new Remington 700 .270 Winchester to a 338/06AI. I then had McMillan install a brand new HTG stock and I'm a happy camper now.

Until we know more about what you really want done, it's hard to recommend a gunsmith. There are a lot of gun plumbers out there and fewer really good gunsmiths. It all depends on your expectations and budget.

That is the rifle he did for me. It was a nice matte black before I used Duracoat. He also inscribed "made by-for-and cal." with some type of jewelers tool in a nice cursive font.

Well if you want a mid range custom.. you'll probably get the best pricing by doing the metalwork with a barrel specialist and having a stock maker make a wood stock.

Bear in mind it's 2011 and hand made to order wood stocks are not cheap. If the stock is fitted to you from a standard pattern of your choice and then cut from semi-fancy walnut with the contrasting accents, good checkering and finish there is no way you will get one made for less than 1K . Especially with an experienced stockmaker giving you advice and council along the way to avoid pitfalls.

Actually, with the nice wood etc probably more like $1,200 at minimum. The one thing about your .375 RUM is really hard dense wood will be needed- English or Bastogne walnut is going to be in order . Good decently figured blank for a rifle like that would start at $300 alone.

Add to that the re-barrel cost and the metal finish you can basically end up with a very very nice sporter that is built to your order for about 2/3 of an equal grade of gun from Cooper etc, if you are careful.

You can easily do the whole thing for less than 2 k and it will knock your socks off when it's all done and something you will cherish the rest of your life because it was built just for you. Smiler
