Nice work...I cut one once and welded up. It's a bitch to get the inside welded and even harder to clean it up afterwards. Sure made yours a nice looking action! _____________________ Steve Traxson

Oh my... what a lovely start to what is sure to be perfection! And in a really fun caliber. Especially for the deer and exotics that populate the Hill Country of Texas! On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch... Beautiful, indeed. But seriously, what a ton of work! The economics would frighten me. Are G33-40/kurz actions that hard to find? Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

G33/40 s are standard 98 (1.30"small ring) actions.

That is nice! I've always thought those shortened Mauser actions were the ultimate when it comes to cool and a shortened G33/40 just steps it up another notch. Duane, please keep this thread updated through the completion of this rifle. -------------------------------------------- Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

I would amend that to say standard "length" 98 actions. They have several features that differ from standard 98's.

That's what I wondered. Got it. Break it to make it, but only if you have to, and only if you want it badly enough. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Very nice, Duane. Since you used parts of two different actions have you considered using the extra rear tang to make an H&H style take-down system? .

Duane, got any pictures of the finished stock, can't tell from the little pic, but looks like it has action panels and a pow grip. Greg

A kurz in 250-3000 would be a dream rifle, I think I'd just recut the G33-40 action slot to original after I shortened it..??? Its very hard to find anyone that's willing to cut an action in half and weld it back together again...Lots of smith tell me they can do it but ever so few will take it on..I can understand that! I suspect few are willing to pay the costs involved, that has been my hesitation for a number of years. I just bought a G33-40 action from a friend of mine to build a nice 7x57 on. He bought it from Brownells many years ago. They checked the hardness of it & marked 25 RC2 on the bottom of it. Do you guys think I should have it reheat treated? Also would you please tell me what are all the difference between the G33-40 & a standard Model 98. At age 71 this is my first Mauser believe it or not. I've built many pre 64 model 70's & Rem. 700's. Thanks very much.

Quasi-Teutonic!! Wow!!! Thanks for sharing. Matt Matt FISH!! Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984: "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Very well done. Not my taste in the stock design but that is what makes a custom a custom... perfectly suited for the customer! Beautiful metal work, Duane, but I just can't warm up to that style pistol grip. I have a Merkel 201 12 gauge shotgun with the same configuration, and I have never been able to make it work shooting international skeet, which requires the gun to be mounted only after the clay target appears. Quick mounting a gun successfully is my main criterion in stock design. I expect my shotgun or rifle to have the sights aligned perfectly when the gun touches my cheek and shoulder, so I'll pass on that design.

The G-33/40 used a small ring action, with lightening cuts along the outside of the receiver rails and a hollow bolt handle knob. It was designed as a weapon for mountain troops, who needed every unnecessary ounce of equipment done away with. The action is prized for use as the basis of a light weight hunting rifle, like my 7X57, which has accompanied me to Africa and accounted for numerous deer in this country.

Count me as one who likes the German style stocks. Not my first choice, but I wouldn't kick it out of bed either. If desired one can make things REALLY petite in all the right areas but keep the strength where it's needed. As always impeccable execution. I'm surprised they didn't go octagonal or octagonal to round on it. This is one style I think fits the octagonal look. http://www.facebook.com/profil...p?id=100001646464847 A.M. Nice little stalking rifle. I've always been a fan of stalking can't stand to sit in a stand, drives me nuts. 250-3000 stalking rifle on White tails? All you need after that is a willing deer and sharp knife. Don't worry bout the open grip as it's not long range rifle where grip control is super critical, short shots for this one 150 yards tops. 250-3000 caliber, not a long range hammer. just a nice stalker for the tight woods. Too cool, Well done Duane.
