I love to stare at a fire and dream up new arms of adventure, the kid inside me is alive and well and turning those ideas into wood and steel, or titanium with Stuart Satterlee's work, fascinates me.

These are a mix of my work, makers' work (the titanium M98 is all Stuart bringing my ideas to life for me), and local machinists doing operations for me to get to where I want the project to go (the No.1 frame slimming).

First is a No.1 7x57R with a dodecagon barrel, finished at 20". I did the stock in far northern bush flying camp to while away the long winter nights, we can often only fly / have legal light four hours of the day in the worst of it, and I hate TV. I had a local machinist slim .100" off the frame, widest part of the rifle is the Leupold 1-4x20's eyepiece and by good measure (second to last pic). Everything was made as slim and trim as possible, I cut the forend to contain the No.1's strut and nothing more, and the butt I cut extremely slim as well. The final pic is the butt freshly wet with oil, and glossy, I have finished it to the soft satin above. Next post I'll start on the Satterlee full titanium M98.

Full titanium (bolt and all) M98 by Stuart Satterlee, .375 2 1/4" Rimless Nitro Express (RNE, or 9.5x57MS metrically speaking). It's my new ultralight right hand for Brown bear / coastal Grizzly guiding. Barrel is a 19" dodecagon SS #3 contour, the irons in the picture are Recknagels that are taped on for laying up in the pic, it has since gained NECGs front and rear will update. This project is rounding out as we speak and will go to work for a living in May guiding. Bridges are integral picatinny, to be able to mount any manner of scope, peep, or red dot.

Finally my ongoing 5.6x50R Magnum, all Canadian. The action is a Hagn Mini, made here in British Columbia by Martin Hagn. The barrel is a 27" cut rifled SS Gaillard, also Canadian.

Goal is to have a 4lb modern high velocity Rook Rifle, the barreled action right now weighs what my 1911 does. Trying to decide whether to work one of my last blanks left pictured, or order a new one. Fortunately can cherry pick small portions of the blank as the stocks will be so small.

Afternoon Roger, that's one of Stuart's composite stocks, he's on here as well and may chime in not sure if he has a provider or lays up in house never asked. Very nice stocks.

That 9.5 looks like a dream of a rifle! What are you loading for a bullet and velocity for bears out of that? Plans for optics?

Just irons most of the time as it's an inside 25 yards brown bear / grizzly guiding gun for work. It's replacing my far too heavy and weather sensitive Merkel 140AE .375

Great guns but those are nice rifles! Well done.

Missed the load question my apologies, CEB sponsored us this year so likely will make use of the 235gr Raptor. I like it as a bear bullet and the weight is well suited to the cartridge. Only fired Speer 235 Hotcors for fireforming thus far, and suspect full house CEB 235s will be going 2400.

Sounds like a nice shooter with that weight bullet. That caliber has never really been on my radar, but now I'm thinking I've an 98 action that might suit this nicely!

Comes with baggage, have three little kids at home, but definitely try to remain productive up there. I can't stand TV and would rather have something to show for the time, wood carving is helpful.

Haven't scaled it since paint, sights, and some other tweaks. Suspect 6 1/4.

We just had a third child and I'm taking time off from helis in the subarctic to focus on family and outfitting, suspect these kinds of projects will become temporarily scarce for me. Appreciate the kind words!

Martin didn't have a following rest and wasn't able to turn the 27" needle I wanted for the 5.6x50R modern high velocity "Rook", though he roughed it close. Not headed back to work where the lathe is in the foreseeable future so figured I'd draw file to clean up the contour. Turned out really nicely except for the sore hands and the mark on my wife's floor from rolling the barrel for hours. I said I don't watch Tv but did this in front of it. Ended up taking most of a dust pan of filings off it by the end.

I second that! When the kids get older and you get back to making pipes I'd like to order one too Smiler
I couldn't agree more with your assessment of TV. An utter waste of time. Great Work! I look forward to seeing your finished Hagn.

Thanks I think so too, that wood is the crown jewel of wood to me, will never work a nicer piece. Safety was a one off done by a friend, he has some serious talent and isn't even a smith.

It starts good and gets cheaper as the night wears on. Big Grin I'm liking Aberlour 10 and 12 for one that can be consumed in "inspring" quantities affordably.

Hello gentlemen,
The Satterlee Arms PH stock is produced here in South Dakota by Fiberglass Custom Products Inc.
FCPI is the main supplier of stocks for other rifle makers both regionally and nationally.
All stocks are produced using a two piece mold and a pattern stock to produce the mold. Each rifle maker has their own mold at FCPI when a stock is needed the order is placed. When I order it usually takes 5 to 10 days for the stocks to be ready depending on work load. I usually order 3 at a time. The Satterlee PH stock can be used on any Mauser as long as the rifle is set up with a drop box magazine as the PH model stock is a drop box stock with British styling. Shell materials used are fiberglass, carbon fiber, and Kevlar.

You should have bought him a steady rest, it would have been cheaper! Big Grin I've done a few pencil, barrels, and even some rather thick barrels, that without a follow rest would have been a nightmare.

Very nice work. All around.
