TimanKW,
Don't be discouraged, get your '09 re-machined and re-heat treated, then build your rifle and never look back. You'll be so glad you did.

gunmakerCustom gunmaking is kind of like sex. You can read about it, watch videos, chat on a forum, fantasize about it. Until you've actually done it correctly....
You can be really good at it without even getting paid.
Seriously, does anyone want to take advice from the zit faced virgin teenager about how to please a woman????

metalGreat idea, lets talk about sex, more specifically blowback/backthrust.
Seriously how much force do you actually get on the lugs anyway?
With-
Sensible load.
Good quality brass properly sized for chamber and cleaned of case lube.
Clean, dry chamber with NO oil.
I say bugger all.
Maybe lug setback is just operator error. Maybe those 1909’s and 1908’s were used to shoot up thousands upon thousands of shitty old ammo or machine gun ammo for training purposes? Who TF knows what happened to them?
In the meantime do what thousands of cultists around the world do, grab a Mauser that was hardened at the original arsenal and proved at 60 + K, load it somewhere in the 50-55K range and just go out and shoot something with it.
If you have access to a state of the art heat treater and it makes you feel better or you’re a gunmaker that has to idiot proof the build then go for it.
No harm either way.

Kolo-PanWhat would be an average cost now for this "recondition" , including the heat treat?

gunmakercall Blanchards and ask them

TimanI'm looking at a HT ticket where I did a single receiver back in '16.
$125 on the treat + $28 ups ground back to me.
and I'm looking at a multiple of 3 receivers from '21. $265 + $24 ups back to me.
I charge an additional $100 to recondition the seats by machine then ensure even contact lugs to seats.

K W JohnstonI'll chime back in on the topic.
Blanchard heat treating a Mauser action currently costs $165 plus return shipping for one Action. If you send more than one its $50 each additional action. So it's more cost effective to send more than one at a time.
I posted a question about Rust Bluing in the Gunsmithing Forum. I would appreciate any input from Custom Gunmakers.
Thanks!

Heym SR20Question - surely you would end up with a better rifle starting off a new Mauser Action made by Prechtl, Mayfair, Granite arms etc. By the time you have taken an old military action, done all the machining, then hardening etc etc you will pretty much invested to the same level.

307RIFLEI built two custom rifles on 1909 Mauser actions and had them both re-heat treated to make sure that there was no set-back issues. One was for a 280 Rem and the other was for a 6.5 Rem Mag. These actions are One Hundred and Thirteen years old and it is a small price to pay to make sure that the job turns out Right. These are custom rifles, Right?

It all depends on which cartridge the build is based around. 30-06 case family built on a '09 DWM receiver and bolt? This build is straight forward and free of more technical hurdles to get over.
Conversion of old actions to larger calibers like 375 H&H thru 500 Jeffery is a much more detailed process requiring advanced machining and gun making skills to arrive at product that performs as we expect it to.
Most people these days have not had enough exposure to the new production M98 actions to qualify for comment, as new production actions are actually quite rare when compared to the old actions which are still widely available.

I agree with Timan. I think a person's geographic location plays a large role in the decision making process. Here, top notch custom work is still affordable.

In my experience...the actions you mention are not at all "ready to go" One of those actions,...pretty easy to use up $1500.00 to
just get it working properly

Vol717Sarco didn’t make the dumoulin receiver. They bought them at discount prices from a Belgian supplier. I had one action tested and it was at rockwell 42. That the only firsthand knowledge I have on Dumoulin.
