Don't know if you've gone past this point, but here's a couple of easily made tools for under the cheekpiece...an aluminum rod and a flat bar stock.  I've simply "crazy-glued" the portions of band saw blades. Works fast and slick.

Thanks for the pic. Any reason why coarse hacksaw blades couldn't work as well?

Yes, but I don't think you'll find any coarse enough for effecient wood removal
