I started this project twenty years ago, and after doing the barrel work, put it aside until recently. It started as a 03/A3 action and I acquired 03 bottom metal that was then slightly reshaped and polished. The barrel is a #1 Mcgowen contour in classic 7x57 Mauser. The action was sent to Michael Scherz for a set of his custom Talley bases and the bolt handle. It has a Timney trigger and will probably get one of Jim Kobe's two position safeties. The stock started as a $100 blank of English that I got years ago when I was in Jack Burres blank a month club. A friend with a pantograph cut the stock. The stock was fit and finished by a retired friend who shall remain nameless unless he gives me permission, and a beautiful job he did, inside and out! He worked around a few problem areas and fit the ebony for-end, Dakota swivel bases, Neidner buttplate and a small grip cap that I got from Dressels. I will have it matte blued and checkered in a nice 22 lpi point pattern and it will be ready to go. If someone can help me, I have some pictures I took that I can e-mail to them if they could add them to this post. I would really appreciate it. My photography skill are poor, but you will still be able to see how nice it has come out so far! Thanks! Lee.

Thanks again to FalGrunt. I'm trying to figure out what parts would look best case colored to set off the matte blue of the barreled action. I'm thinking... Bases and rings, grip cap, and the two position safety/shroud. I am not sure if the swivel bases would be right, colored. What do Y'all think?

Very nice. A 7x57 Springfield, that should be quite a Texas hunting rifle.

You know, you'd think that with the Talley detachables that I would iron sight it, and originally that was my intention. It was going to be a English flavored, express sighted rifle. Jim and Mike might remember the springfield .458 that I brought to the last big bore shoot, it was very professionally built with gorgeous work, since it was straight American Classic, I decided to follow the same general theme with this one, sort of to "pair". I kind of like the slick barrel trimness on the 7x57, so I have some thinking to do. If the CC would show up on the checkered BP, I'm with you, Jim, but I think blue will work.

Boy, I take back everything I've ever thought about the looks of an 03 Springfield action. That thing is gorgeous! The bolt handle and the Talleys on the bridges change it's appearance completely!
