I was told gold inlays ware-out or erode away like anything.

Ken Hurst from Lynton McKenzie in Meek's book.

Gold inlays only wear when they are subject to abrasion, as in carrying/handling or sliding in and out of a tight-fitting case. Grip cap should be no problem at all.

OTOH gold inlays especially of animals are considered by some to be somewhat flashy, while a well-executed gold border is almost always acceptable to even a conservative eye.
Regards, Joe

shootaway,

Sorry, did not mean to be derisive. I need more turorial on subtle humor. Your floor plate is gorgeous and begs the question: Why not use the same engraver for the grip cap?
Seems there would be less discrepancy in styles and you would not be asking one engraver to copy that of a peer.
Just a thought, maybe not a good one, eh?

Shootaway,

You have the ring in hand. Any time you give a craftsman creative license things, at least in my world, seem to work out to perfection. Your money is well spent. Keep us posted.

Yes, it looks far better in person... Marty is a talented individual. Looking forward to seeing him during SCi.

There's a story with that woodchuck.

The gunsmith (G. Beitzinger) that had it done ask Gino for a woodchuck. When George got it back it was a bird, a Woodcock. George called Gino back and told him is was wrong.

Gino said,"Woodchuck, woodcock what the difference". He was a fast worker.
