walnut....either turkish or claro for Winchesters. Sure there are alternatives, but a nice walnut is hard to beat. All the walnut I have used, the checkering has been nice and crisp,no fuzz. I wouldn't look at it as a percent........it's all about the wood. In all my builds it turned out to be around 20%. I've paid up to $2K for blanks (for guns that cost twice as much as a decade ago). For guesstimating purposes $1K is reasonable enough to get a decent piece of wood with good grain and nice figure. Yeah you can also find some decent bargains.........but ya get what you pay for..........For a couple hundred you can get perfect grain through the wrist but looks like it belongs on a chair you bought from Walmart or a nice dark figure on the butt with shit grain or yellow pine up front, etc.......(kinda like a blonde with non matching luggage ) There are two types of people in the world: those that get things done and those who make excuses. There are no others.

Most of the cost of a good custom is going to be labor, unless you do the work yourself. Don't skimp on wood, the action or barrel. Having said that, perfectly fine Turkish or California English can be had for $500-$1000, sometimes less. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. I have a piece of Australian being inletted at present for a custom LH 400 H&H. The "board" was $1195 and an absolute steal, as I see it...

I think he means for the blank. I'd call it about 10% for me.

I have paid 500-1800 for blanks. Stock making I have gotten quotes all over from 2300 to 8000 The most reasonable I have spent on wood is 150.00 and 700.00 to inlet, finish, grip cap, forend tip and checker.
