Information on these actions is fairly limited so thought I would ask if anyone has had experience with using one for a build.

I am looking for a new Mauser type action which will give good accuracy in a medium calibre 7 or 8 mm.

All comments appreciated. Thanks

The m98 action which RECKNAGEL sells is the same what Mauser factory uses in their m98 rifles. Both made in Germany by Gottfried Prechtl.

Holland and Holland told me they use these actions for their magazine rifles. Suspect many of the other London makers do the same.

Contact New England Custom Gun . They have imported them in the past, but I don't know if they do so now. When I spoke with them several years ago the magnum length actions were north of $3K.

Ive have heard Prechtl can also supply an action unhardened,[if one so specifies] and provides the hardening specs. for when it comes time to harden.
Thats what i call looking after-catering to the custom rifle builder!... tu2

Last year I was quoted a price of $5,000.00 for the Prechtl Mag Mauser action.

NECG builds their own rifles on these actions & imports them for others.

Best,
Dave

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to respond to the question. It is much appreciated.

I shall keep looking at the options as it seems that Rechnagel are no longer stocking / manufacturing these actions.

Any suggestions for actions that might be available in UK or Europe will be appreciated.

I do not know where you have got that idea because those action are still in their newest cataloque (number 7). And if they have stopped selling actions they have mentioned that in their home page.

You don't know where I got that from because I did not say, Simple.

In fact it came to me as a response from the same enquiry to the Rechnagel UK Agent, and I don't believe that a salesman would normally be untruthful in order to deliberately lose a potential sale.

In any event, it is not worth discussing any further, and thank you for your response to the original question.

Ive had agents-salesmen tell me both deliberate lies and undeliberate misinformation.
Id check with Gottfried Prechtl himself to know for sure.
A high level smith I know recently made a direct enquiry about purchase of a Prechtl M98 action. Prechtl seemed willing to supply one and also help with the export.

Hi ELR

No, I hadnt looked at these actions up to now, and don't know anything much about them, but I'll research the net for info. That might be an option ...IF... Montana will export to UK.

Anyone had any experience of them here?

Thanks for the heads up, much appreciated.

2 Days Later: I've read a great deal here and elsewhere, and there seem to be very mixed opinions from buyers and users.

I get the feeling that this is not the way to go, a total rethink of the project is in order.

It looks like a trade off between an old real Mauser action or one of the much less expensive clones from Brno/CZ. The cost implications and licensing difficulties would preclude importing an action from the US I think.
