I stumbled on this one on the internet and hit the buy button so quick I broke a fingernail. I sold my last Haugh rifle for $13,000 and it wasn't as nice as this one.

A varification revealed it was built 15 years ago, metal by Jacks son, Frank Haugh, and the stock was done by Jack Haugh according to Mrs Houghs records..The rifle is reputed to have been unfired and I believe that to be true based on my inspection, but I will correct that this week.. tu2

It is a 35 Whelen on a original Obendorf single square bridge action, barrel band swivel, Haugh barrel band front sight and a one standing and 3 down all shallow V's with gold center bars and the sights are checkered in fine LPI, and the safety has fire and safe in gold. Rifle has a typical Haugh stock in English styling that is absolutly perfect in every way and the metal work is par excellent, lean and mean and points like a Boss 28 ga.
I have owned several Haugh rifles over the years, but this one is the best of the best, I have never seen a more perfect rifle in my life...Will I eventually sell? perhaps because its just too nice to hunt with, but then maybe not! I'm reluctant right now.

I hunted my last Jack Haugh rifle to death, wore the leather covered recoil pad to the rubber, it was a .338 Win. on a 1935 Chilean action and much the same as this new one..I sold it eventually, and regretted it of course, but such is the life of a gun whore.

My only complaint is I cannot scope this gun as I would not consider modifying the actions square bridge, or drilling and tapping a G&H side mount, but if I do change my mind then at some point I just might punch it out to a 358 Norma, add a G*H side mount with a 2x7x33 or 3X fixed Leupold, a mod 70 safety, and hunt the living hell out of it..I would need no other rifle except a 404.. sofa stir

No more help please, the temptation of scoping it is grinding on me daily..Its not the smart thing to do, but........ shocker

I worry that I will wake up one day with my "give a sh---ter" in neutral and stick something like a G&H QD side mount on it, been thinking maybe I could solder it onm so I wouldn't have to drill holes in the action or destroy the square bridge, or even cut the wood if I did it right....

On many an ocassion I have sold a lovely rifle like this just so I wouldn't muck it up! Its fate is in my hands I suppose, hunt it to death or sell it!! It feels just too good to part with, maybe I'll just shoot irons, I was raised on them, hunted with them all my life off and on and hey I do have some scoped rifles laying around this place.. beer

You said no more help . . . but there are options !!

You say its a single square bridge, does the rear bridge have a socket for a scope mount, many of them did.

If it does, then you can mount a scope without drilling and tapping on the receiver. Have a new socket made up for the rear that will take a Talley ring. Have a band made up for the barrel reinforce that gives you a Talley dovetail.

Finally have a custom Talley ring made that goes around the objective bell of your chosen scope.

I have just recently completed such a project for a Mauser Kurz that would have been a crime to drill on. I am not at liberty to post photo's of the project online but I will email you some. (on completion I'll post them up here)

Cheers

Tentman,
Since its a rare single square bridge Mauser you would have to dovetail the rear bridge, tig on a front square bridge tig that on, change the engraved safety and turn down the rather fancy bolt, all of which is unreasonable on this very valueable gun, especially one my the Haughs.

Tempting yes, but I would never do that, I may sell it as a result of that, who knows, or I might just hunt it to death just like it is, using scars are allowed, changing is not! tu2 I shoot irons pretty darn good..

I have a Single Square Bridge that started life as a Westley Richards 318Accellerated. It is now a 375 H&H with a nice barrel That David Miller did with an integral rib that he 'differential' blued. Super nice job as to be expected. As the Mauser bolt knob was nicely engraved by Westley Richards I couldn't bear to lower it for a scope so I had undercuts made in the rib to mount Ruger rings and tried a scout scope. It shot beautifully but I just could never get used to the crummy look so took off the scope and mounted one of Rusty Marlins cocking piece sights and it still shoots marvelously and now looks right.
