I recently came across this supposedly post war Mauser rifle chambered in 7x57mm .The seller says it was made in 1952 with German & British proof marks. The rifle is very clean for it's age and the seller is asking $1200.Can anybody look at the proofs and tell what type of Mauser it is and if it's priced within reason.

That's what I thought pre war k98? It has a nitro proof mark on the barrel along with other markings.The front ring does have the swastika waffen mark but what is the mark next to it?

The action is most likely a scrubbed K98. The rifle could have been made anytime after WWII. A proof law reference of some sort could help you date when the rifle was proofed, but it may not get you to the exact year of proof, and certainly won't tell you when it was made. From your pics, the quality looks great. Is there a front sight on the barrel? The price of guns like this is highly subjective. I think $1200 may be a bit much, but not outrageous. To have that rifle built today, would certainly cost you more. The Claw mounts alone are quite pricey. I think that is a lovely and elegant looking rifle. The comb of the stock is very low, like that of early mauser commercial sporters. I find them too low for comfortable shooting with iron sights, much less with glass. Thanks Matt.Well I've wanted a 7x57 in a Mauser this rifle looks to be well made .It doesn't have a front site .The proof marks on the barrel look to be after the war.I can't find a reference on the front ring mark next to the swastika can you make it out?

Nice looking Mauser, I would however suggest you take it out of the stock. There maybe more "telling" #s etc. under there. The way the front ring is used for the scope mount makes me a bit suspicious about the date. --- John
That is the eagle N proof mark and the other marks are English proofs. It was probably made in Germany and then somehow got to England; remove the barrel and you should see more marks and/or a date under there.
