Calibers for trio?

If you built a trio, based on the Sako actions, models L461, L579 and L61R.

What calibers would you choose for them?

In Finland trio would be .222 Rem, 308 win and .300 Win Mag. These caliber are here most popular in those actions. But my own choice would be totally different... Smiler

My Africa battery consists of:
30-06
375 h & h
458 Lott

All are LH CRF M70's w/sights, but the Sako actions would be just lovely. I have a L461 in 257 AI for deer and pronghorn.

For North America, do you need a varmint rifle, and will you be hunting brown bear?

I'd likely go
280 Rem
338 Win mag
416 Rem mag

But
7x57
300 H+H
416 Taylor
Would be "cool"

I like the "triple deuce" on the little Sako (I have 2 of them)
While the 308 would make sense for the medium action, I'd probably opt for a 7mm-08.
The 300 Win Mag would be my choice for the big gun.

This is very similar to what a previous poster suggested.

Assume the L61R is a standard action and not the L61R Magnum?

Based on the action sizes, I recommended you stick with rounds that fit nicely.

For the L461 I'd go with a 223 Rem

For the L579 I'd go with a 308 Win

For the L61R depends on what you are hunting and where. If not DG, then I'd do a 338 Win Mag or 9.3x62 or even the 30-06 or 35 Whelen. I assume you could open the bolt face for the 338 Win Mag. If you are doing DG, then you could go with a 416 Taylor.

If I was doing it today it be a .223, 6.5 / 7x57 and a .375H&H. For me that would cover most of my hunting situations, mice to moose. --- John

You guys need to go read about the size of these actions - most of the cartridge trios listed here will not work.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

L461 6x45, I built one for my youngest son and now I have to have one too! This rifle/cartridge combo is 100% pure joy!

L579 .308, I had one and shot it to the point of boredom (5000+ rds)then rebarreled it and traded it off. Now I need one again. You can't go wrong on this combo.

L61R either 338/06 or 375H&H depending upon where and what I was planning to hunt. I recently passed on a 338/06 in this set up and have had regrets since.

Are you planning to buy/build for a specific hunt?

.223 because ammo is cheap, excellent little round, everyone should have one.

middle one is tougher but a 6.5x55, 7mm08, .284 would all be nice.

.375 Ruger unless the action is large enough for the H&H. If that is too large for any use you would have a .338 Win mag would be superior.

Nortman, be careful. I started out having this 300 H&H built on a barreled action bought here on AR, then added a 338 Win Mag, then a 7mm Mauser, then a 404 Jeffery, then a 458 Win Mag, and finally a 505 Gibbs. Matching rifle sets are addicting!

some countries prohibit the use of military chambering for hunting rifles so you might want to check that out if you want to chamber the L-461 in .223

To go off on a tangent. Is a rifle marked 223 considered a military cartridge? The 5.56 is the military cartridge and it is different although dimensionally identical.
My three choices were dictated by the three different sized actions. I would select a couple different ones without that limiting issue.
