Curious what you think of the top rifle. Did anyone ever make 98 style actions that short, or has this been shortened? Looks shorter than a Kurz to me. Caliber is 222 rem.

Thanks,
John

Wow! That's neat. Looks like the ring is longer than "usual" Any evidence of welds? The bolt looks like maybe does'nt have the normal 98 claw extractor??? Front lugs like a 98?

The rifle is on the upcoming Rock Island auction. Lot #814. I don't know anything other than what you can tell from the pictures. The description does not give any useful information.

Interesting. Hope someone rolls the dice on this one. Great potential for a custom super short provided the shortening is nicely done and there's no great pedigree hidden under the action.
Looks like a gunsmith project from the 50's using the bolt and the trigger from a so-called sporter (copy) made right after WW1. Brno 21-22 trigger guard?
Neat.

This is s really neat little rifle. I am at the auction now and have some pictures. I have no way to get them posted from here but would be glad to email them to someone if they could get them up here. Whoever shortened this did a very good job. Email me at jeholliger@gmail.com if you could post the pics.

Thanks,
John

Congratulations. I had to leave so I left a conservative absentee bid for the rifle. I'd sure like to know the story behind the rifle. You can see where the bolt was welded, but they did a good job on the receiver. I found it interesting that they gave the left wall the G33/40 treatment. I also found it interesting that the receiver looks to have never had a stripper clip notch either. HOpe you enjoy the rifle.

That bit of carving behind the pistol grip is often referred to as a Shelhamer Chinstrap.Thomas Shelhamer was considered a master stock maker. This was often seen on his stocks. If this is one of his then you have indeed purchased a special rifle. Shelhamer stocks were stamped in the barrel channel or under the buttplate with his name(shelhamer).

Possibly the front of a Peruvian welded to the back of a commercial FN. Long front ring and no stripper clip in back. Very cool little rifle in any event, would be a wonderful companion for ambling down a cool quiet backwoods trail in search of game.

Butch, my Shelhamer collection is down to only 4 at this time. I've examples from a very early single shot to one of the last stock jobs he did and a couple in between so I'm good unless the Win 52 illustrated in Dunlaps book comes on the market. Might have to sell the farm for that one.

I'm quite certain the rifle in question is not a Shelhamer.

I remember reading in one of my rifle books about a gunsmith who made magnum length Mausers by cutting two actions, one in the front third and one in back third and welding them together. Then he was taking the short halves and making mini-Mauser actions.

How about just owning it and enjoying what you got, Its a neat little gun, with what appears to be excellent workmanship..Id venture to say its worth a bundle,

Do an investigation on it, that's a fun project for sure and no tellings what you will find out...

I have a 1953 Austrian Marholt Mauser in my collection. Its also has a custom shortened action in 222 Rem caliber with a 4x claw mounted Nickel scope. This was a Jaeger rifle and shoots best with 70g bullets. (under 1" @ 100yds)
