Another old sight picture trick is to make diagonal marks on the front sight blade with a pencil. It's cheap and easy if it works for you. Also, are you blackening the sight? Bic lighter, etc? Different front sight blade widths are available or used to be. This can help a lot especially shooting round targets at known distances. Covey16

DaMan In any venue I can always count on you. The etc in my comment included carbide smokers, sprays, sticking your barrel in the campfire, whatever. Sprays tend to build up plus 2 things I always have with me are a knife and the ability to make fire(Bic). Your welcome to use Plutonium, cyanide case hardening, whatever you like on your front sight. Any comments on the other tips? It's tought to tell what people are aware of these days,Rifle magazine had a 7 page article by a noted writer on hasty slings. Suposed to be the best thing since sliced bread, who could have imagined doing that with a sling. Covey16

Quote: Covey, you must be trapped in some sort of "time warp"! "Spray-on" sight black is available..... now-a-days! Don't have to take a "smudge candle" with you! DaMan

Covey, Someone recently suggested blackening the sight, and I tried it yesterday, and yes it helps. I also found that seating depth at max oal has improved the accuracy. She is starting to come together, but now I have to buy more bullets!!! I am wondering if a 168 gr. Hornady Moly Coated Bullet will be make a noticable difference in accuracy, or if I should just stick with the 165 gr. SPBT, which I can use in my bolt action, too. I have also been looking at synthetic stocks and fresh barrels for the Garand, and they may fit right into my budget if I stop eating for a few weeks!!! I don't think I need a Krieger barrel, so $200 or less would probably be money well spent. I think I'm getting obsessed!!!

Your on the slippery slope Mike. Personally, I'd stick to minor improvements until I could shoot better than the gun was capable of or the barrel was shot out. At that time ,I would save my pennies and ship the gun to a Garand friendly gunsmith and get the rebarrel , using a quality barrel, and the other accuracy improvements that will tighten the gun up. If you are just killing paper , I would try 150gr SMK,a Win case,Rem 9 1/2 primer and somewhere between 48 and 50 gr of IMR 4895. I see a sling, shooting coat, spotting scope, glove and a 2 round clip in your future. BEWARE JMO Covey16 PS on the Moly, I wouldn't bother with it at this point. JMO Never was a molly slopper, though many outstanding shooters are. When you get your rebarreled, welded, honed ,skim bedded, sights track perfectly rifle back from the $gunsmith$ you might try moly at that time. Covey16

DaMan Garand matches are getting to be a big deal in NRA competition. I gave the 150 gr load as a bench shooting, generally accurate load . Years ago 168's and 4064 was the hot tip, but 4064 is a real pain when you have to load in quantity. It does work well. Hornady makes some good match bullets,I've used them in .223, but in my experience lot to lot consistency is not equal to Sierra . just my personal experience. Covey16

Covey, Thanks for realing me in!!! I was feeling the urge to head for deep water!!! I did buy some bullets today... I'm going to try the Hornady 168 BTHP Match. The price was right ($17 and change). I'll see how they work. A two round clip would be nice for shooting the matches, but I can't afford to shoot that much yet. After I'm out of college and have a real job, then I might be able to consider it. I always enjoyed shooting the CMP practice matches at the 100 yd. targets. I also think I might give the IMR 4895 a try...I have a little left. Thanks again!!

Sierra 165 gr. Game Kings was my option for a bullet for both the Garand and the Model 70. I have had really good results with Sierra Game King bullets for my .35 Whelen, but I haven't tried them in the 06's. In a few weeks, I'm going to buy 100 of them, shoot out the old ammo I have for the Model 70, and work up the load using the Sierras. The Hornady Match Bullets are an experiment to see if I can aquire any noticable increase in accuracy in the Garand. If it works, I'll dedicate a space in my inventory for Match Garand bullets. If there is no noticable difference, I'll just buy Sierra Game Kings and use them in both. I am such a cheap bastard!!!! But that's my thinking.

The old-timers always prefered IMR-4064 with 168gr. match bullets in the Garand. Don't know why. I don't know what the best load for match shooting with the Garand would be now-a-days. Not many of them still used in serious competition. DaMan

Mike I shoot quite a few Sierra 60gr hp in my AR, almost as good as Sierra Match and much cheaper. Some don't like the terminal balistics of some Sierra hunting bullets, but they tend to be very consistent dimensionally and effective if fired at factory recommended veolcitys. Good luck on your experiment in better, cheaper, faster Garand shooting. Covey16

Quote: I don't know about the "Garand only" matches being a "big deal" in NRA competition. These matches are still pretty "few and far" between in my part of the country. The Sierra 168 gr. was the most popular target bullet for the Garand years ago. A lot of the "old timers" would pull the bullet from the M-72 match rounds and substitute 168 gr. MKs ("Mexican Match"). The M-72 loads were charged with 50 gr. of IMR-4895. So a 50 gr. charge behind a 168gr. MK bullet should work pretty well. I wonder if M-72 ammo is still available through DCM?
