Has anyone had a good experience adapting the SKS to a removable magazine model? I have heard that none of them work very well.

Thanks

Mike

Detachable magazines usually don't work that well in the SKS. But you may have another option besides trying to fit a 20 round attached box magazine. When the AK won favor as a commie service rifle many SKS rifles were modified to accept AK magazines. You can find M and D models, imported to the US, that accept AK magazines and feed very reliably.

I don't know why everyone has probs my SKS works fine with a 30 round banana clip I also have a fiber force stock. although one thing the 30 round clip is overrated i think i have filled it only a couple times i think i would be happy with a ten round removable clip, the 30 round also tends to get in the way when shooting from a bench

I agree that the 30 round magazines get in the way. The 10 round box is just fine, quick to reload with stripper clips and maintains a fairly clean look. With the cost of the AK's, Romanian I think, being imported now, if a detachable magazine is that important, just buy an AK.

Not to mention that by adding a removeable magazine, you have completed the two main criteria that are needed for making an illegal assault rifle. If, besides being semi-automatic and having detachable magazine, you have any two of the following: pistol grip stock, folding or telescoping stock, grenade launcher, bayonet or bayonet lug, threaded muzzle or flash suppressor, then you have just made yourself an illegal assault rifle, and do you really want to do serious time for the sake of detachable mag? The newly imported Yugos with the bayonet and grenade launcher are a perfect example where you turn a perfectly legal rifle into a rifle that get you serious time merely by adding a detachable magazine. I'm not saying I agree with the law, which I most certainly do not, but the law is the law whether you agree with it or not.

Excellent advice Big Bore.

Mike, I've shot an sks with a 2 different 30 round detachable mags and they did not work too well. They mis-fed and jammed up the gun.

The mags we used were thin sheet metal and they just felt cheap and flimsy to me. I think you are better off sticking with the factory box mag. Or better yet, just get an AK-47.

I put a 5-round one from Cabela's on mine to make it legal for hunting in NY. It is now a single-shot!! I don't believe I have ever gotten it to feed even ONE ROUND!! So, I guess it's legal....maybe even in PA, since it is now a "manually operated" rifle!!
