Civilized powers today possess much more destructive weapons than in WWI but use precision guided bombs and make a concerted effort to reduce collateral damage. I'm afraid that if we were ever attacked by an uncivilized enemy they would seek to destroy anything and everything they could and our cities would look like the ones in these pictures.

It is my understanding that the reason so few photos exist about WWI is that the brass was worried about the negative effect on civilan morale.The punishment for having a camera was death. I was able to visit many of the WWI battlefields during the early 1960s. Verdun was the most chilling, the sky was overcast and windy. You got the impression that the souls of the dead would never find peace.

My grandfather and some great uncles served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at "the Somme" in the last engagement there, "Courcelette" and at Passchendaele, which most of we Canadians tend to regard as the worst of all.

A close neighbour as a lad, was a "Vimy Ridge" veteran and the C.E.F. battalion from my hometown was the first to go into action there and was almost annihilated. Canada suffered some 250,000 combat casualties in "The Great War" from a total population of about 7,000,000....people like me have not and will never forget.
