I've just taken delivery of a swiss Schmidt Rubin 7.5x55. It's date of manufacture is 1911, yet is in incredible condition with hardle a blemish on the stock and beautiful bore.

Anyone else have on of these and can offer some advice?

Check out SwissRifles.com, you'll find a lot of info there. If it is a 1911 and not a conversion, it was manufactured between 1913 and 1933. The serial number will tell you it's year of manufacture and the model type as originally produced(1911, 1905, 1896, or ?). Best-o-Luck

I have about 10 of them lying around, some brokend down, some in OK condition.

Sort of a clunky looking gun, but they are very well made.

Now that 7.5 Swiss ammo is back on the market for cheap, it makes these guns shootable.

My advice, unless you want to lock it away for collecting, would be to buy some of this ammo, go out and shoot it, and make sure you have fun.

I'll pass on another interesting tidbit of info. As pretty much everyone in Switzerland had their own military rifle that they kept and shot and such, many (mine did) have a paper slip with the owners name and town under the buttplate. I have heard tell of some folks contacting the former owners.

No such luck with the info under the buttplate.....that's because i got hold of an unissued rifle!!!

The rifle was sent straight from long term storage to the dealer (he specialises in aquiring mint ex-service rifles) - i saw the paperwork. You should see some of the Ross, Ishpore and Mausers he has. I could also have chosen the shorter K31 carbine, but prefered the look and handling of the older (and longer) rifle.

Mint perhaps, unissued unlikely

Unissued - guaranteed. The accompanying paperwork had the armourers initial accuracy report and the storage receipt - not that i could bloody read it.

The metal is absolutely perfect (crown unmarked, chamber with very little sign of wear) - i'll take some pics when i get a chance.
