grape creek,

Great story, thanks for sharing.

rugeruser,

My experience with firing the BREN is pretty much in agreement with yours. Although it seems to me that it pushes back a bit more than a BAR does as well as spinging forward harder than the BAR. The BAR pushes back harder than it springs forward, if that makes any sense??? Anyway, I find the BREN seems to stay relatively stationary while the BAR will move you around a bit. Also the BAR is more prone to muzzle climb than the BREN. Suppose that may have more to do with the buttstock position i.e. drop at comb.

When I get around to it maybe I will take a picture of the BREN's piston/carrier next to the BAR's. The piston is considerably larger on the BREN. I would guess that the carriers themselves are probably about the same weight, though the BREN's may be heavier. Like I said, when I get some time (read PROPERLY MOTIVATED) I will post the pictures (the BREN is easy the BAR is sort of a b_tch to put back together!)

Paul H,

I for one am glad to hear you found this thread interesting.

Just for the record, I posted here for almost 2 years, pretty much as I do now as ASS_CLOWN, before I got into a rather nasty little fight with, GeorgeS, 500grains, Robgunbuilder, and a couple others who's handles now escape me. It only snow balled from there. Also, I am not, nor have I ever been "judy". I once posted one post as "Sheena" though if I recall correctly, but only IN JEST!

You are correct though Paul, my intent now is to treat others as I would like to be treated. Of course when attacked, libeled, or otherwise disrespected, I will also practice the converse of statement.

I am not too sure that any of the "history" has much at all to do with what happened on this thread though. I think it may be more recent "history", actually.

ASS_CLOWN

PS - glad you like the handle also. I think is speaks volumes to my extremely low self-esteem.

To those that haven't been invovled with AR for several years, they won't be aware of the bad blood that AC developed with many, many members. This was done with his previous alliases, Todd E, Judy, and many others. That is the history.

To an extent, with his new alias, that many would consider a deserving one, he has turned over a new leaf, or rather is trying to. Some have chosen to forgive and forget. Others take every opportunity to jump on him whenever they get the chance.

Personally, I can't stand when a thread is hijacked, which is exactly what has happened on this one. This has been one of the most interesting threads I've read, the historical perspective of those that used the BREN in service was most enjoyable.

To those in the AC fan club perhaps you could find another venue to bust his balls.

Paul,

pleased to know you enjoyed the show!!

I'm sure you'll find that virtually anyone who's used one will find it REAL easy to talk about the Bren - they really are a lovely LMG. I'd give quids (Dollars) to get my hands on one again! Just for old time's sake.

Yeh, rugeruser, but the thread has gotten so long and off the subject that nobody is responding. I had occasion to use a BREN in Laos in 1965. Actually, i captured it. Flying North American A-28 out of thialand to suppress arms transport along rivers and bicycle trails in Laos, Cambodia, NV, tl, and border china. at 200' taking a lot of small arms, had an oil sump clipped. engine seizure occurred 3 minutes later, but had cleared the area and had gotten into the mountains before i found it necessary to find some other means of transportation. 2 days later, was confronted by a group of bandits who wanted to ransom me for money, arms, supplies, women, whatever. I was carrying a Sig "Liberty" (colt-type single action) chambered in 357 magnum but holding 38sp midrange wadcutters for accuracy (I couldn't hit shit with factory 357 ammo). Hit the closest guy with it, then grabbed his big gun and mag pouch and 2 grenades (which i flipped) and ran like hell. i recognized the bren from wwII movies. I fired off the mag then ran some more. After a few minutes, figured how to reload it, but nobody else appeared. Fired off a couple more mags down the trail, then left the gun and ran. carried the remaining mags a while then tossed them too. i remember that the gun was far too heavy to carry while running. i also remember that the cycle rate was very slow (or the adrenalin made it seem slow. i don't know which) i could count the rounds fired. very brief encounter.
Fired a BAR (30.06) during survival training in flight school. 20 round mag. no problem with ground clearance at prone. recoil from continuous firing would slide you backward slightly, especially if your toes weren't dug in.
Fired a captured FN-LAR in an attempted over-run at a banana plantation airstrip also in 1965. slow, heavy, awful trigger.
RUGERUSER, don't be disheartened. "There are WANNABEE'S everywhere. until they have done it, they don't know SHIT. and it is pretty easy to tell who has and who hasn't." (Stephen Pless, my CO in flight school)
