I've had this mauser for a few years now, but don't know much about it. I do know that it has matching serial numbers, the stock has been refinished, and sadly, it looks like some asshole has ground off the arsenal marks. That's about as much as I know. It is in really good condition though. The next question is... Should I leave it as it is, or build something on the action? Thanks. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() FiSTers... Whatizit? Looks possibly like a war-year rebuild or put-together....I'm leaning towards it being a Polish version of the Model 98AZ Carbine? (Page 253, Mauser Military Rifles of the World, 3rd edition)

Couple of observations. No bayonet lug and barrel doesn't extend the usual amount past the stock. Rear sling loop looks Italian? What's the caliber? Grizz Indeed, no human being has yet lived under conditions which, considering the prevailing climates of the past, can be regarded as normal. 8mm Mauser. And it does have some sort of lug on the front. It's part of the front sight that extends forward over the barrel and has a groove in it. Couple of other notes: In the picture of the side of the receiver, it's hard to see, but there is a stamping of "50" with a mark right above it that looks like a crescent with the open end facing up. That 88 stamp is on the underside of the receiver and I have no idea what that is supposed to be in between the eights. There's the 8 in the box, but I can't tell what that is below. That picture actually shows the marks better than with the naked eye. In the stock is a stamp that looks king of like a long, sweeping "W", the serial number, and the eagle. The only other markings it has is the serial number on the parts. Floorplate, bolt handle, etc. FiSTers... Running is useless.

It does not appear to be of German manufacture, based upon the upper handguard/sight positioning. German manufacture K98 rifles did not have wood between the barrel ring/receiver and the rear tangent sight. Yugo mausers did. I am not an expert on Mausers, so the absence of most identifying markings leave me in the dark.

That's a good point. It does have some differences from my yugo, but very well could be one that somebody ground off the arsenal mark and stamped k98 in the side. I'll have to measure the receivers and see how that comes out. I only paid 50 bucks for it, so it's no big deal if it does end up being a yugo. I'm really just trying to figure out if I should leave it the way it is or re-barrel it and drop it in another stock. I'm thinking 25-06. FiSTers... Running is useless.

Small ring and the trigger guard profile suggests perhaps a 98a (small ring, large thread) - but just a guess on my part. --- John303.

PM sent. A well-travelled Polish Cavalry short rifle w/ plenty of history: passed-thru the SCW, as evidenced by the "scrubbed" receiver ring (all traceable native country-of-origin markings were thusly obliterated). Oddly enough, the "Crescent Moon" is a Turk proof. (Holy shytt, is that enough globe-trotting for this kritter?) Orig caliber was 8x57JS. These are a small-ring configuration action, however the model accepts a large ring bolt. One caveat w/ the plans, tho: the .25-06 Rem is a significantly higher-pressure round by approx 18-20%, & rebarreling it to this cal will likely trash the action in a hurry. If you need a sporter, have you considered buying one already altered, or perhaps a Remchester - rather than ruining a piece of history?

Thank you. Still never got around to measuring the receiver. I'll most likely just leave it as-is. BTW... Like your avatar. FiSTers... Running is useless.

The stamped front ring looks to be Czech. The stock is most likely a re-hash. The groove in the front sight base is for a k98 hood. VZ 24 Stock, w/ VZ cut down barreled action. K98 bolt. A big time mutt! The flat butt was not used on later K98's, and this one has all the ear marks of a VZ24, except it was cut! The K98 is a fake!!

Wow - return to "Mauser 101". Very happy to add 2 more dorks to the ignore tab. Seriously here: a Vz stock? A little "knowledge" can sometimes be a dangerous commodity. Would suggest that somebody pull thier heads out. Just wondering, tho: what the heck have the last 2 geniuses been smokin', 'cuz there's more truth/logic in any Bevis & Butthead cartoon.

As evidenced by your post, It doesn't take much for a self appointed expert to lose any and all credibility he may have had, if any. Not that you had any to begin with.

"suckle his throbbing bone." Hmm, seems you have an interest in homosexual oral copulation. Not to worry, I won't ask, and you'll not have to tell.

1st off, when was I rude or nasty to you. The OP asked for opinions, that is what he got! BTW, it is spelled "Though" you ignoramous! WTF is tho???? I did do some more research before I read your reply. It does look to be a wz98, a Radom that was scrubbed and restamped by the Germans, partially. There are still issues w/ this rifle!!! There should be a stacking hook, there is no bayonet lug, the barrel is to short, there is no bolt take down disk, and that front cap looks stamped. Sorry if you disagree! You can tell everyone it was Hitlers hunting rifle for all I care. Have a nice life @sshole.

Jpat, I have zero to lose here. I know what I'm doing. In your case: You have plenty at risk. That classic keyboard diahhrea from your initial post is about enough for a felony sentence amongst Mauser collectors - stateside or o/w. Suggest that you quit pushing your pathetic knowledge base/luck - we don't need any further confirmation of your cluelessness. (But, some fools will always be just at that level). Thus, you might wish to do yourself & all of us a great favor: STFU, or else get some education. BUY IT if you must. It's your reputation at risk here.

SteelSlinger is clean & righteous - an honest gent looking for honest info. Am thus offerinig a very Merry Christmas to you, sir. Unfortunately, this site has no "troll police" & thus: some people can somehow abound (and unfortunately) survive here. Maybe even inbreed? God help them. Bad words, etc. Regardless, SteelSlinger has a very decent K98 engineer carbine there. The other dorks: both have a mouth on each other's organ. So play yourselves a nice tune tonight!
