Any Marines out there?

DARTH 44Any Marines out there?
Howdy!
First off, this question is not about guns so please forgive me.
You`ll understand why I chose this forum to ask my question
after I get to the point.
Well,I`m currently translating a book from English to another
language for a friend of mine. The book is full of military(Marines)
terms, but translation went smoothly and by the numbers....
Until I got stuck!

Please read these quotes:
1."It was weird. This beebop just stood there after I`d flamed her
completely motionless."
2."He`d fire M40s into the upper jungle canopy and watch the airburst
shred everything below.Legend had it he would detect the Beebops
by smell and even figger the range from a single sniff..."
3."The Beebops knew the bunny dropping trick....."
And now please tell me,WTF is >BEEBOP<????
I`ve checked all available dictionaries,Internet ones included..
zero,nilch,nada,to no avail.

I suppose/speculate this may be "enemy" in Marines` slang but
I don`t want to base my translation on suppositions and/or
speculations.I want it to be as precise as possible.
Can anyone help me?
Regards

Rick 0311That would be a derogatory term (do Marines have anything else for non-Marines?

) for someone who seems oblivious to what is going on around them.
Can be used to describe a person or an action. Examples: This beebopper walked right into the tail rotor!...Or... This guy was just beebopping along and walked into the tail rotor!

craigsterDittybopper and dittybopping were also common. Basically translated, a dumb shit not paying attention and/or fucking off.

Actually I think the most common descriptive name was “shit-bird.â€
We used to call the dumber NVA/VC Gomers, as in Gomer Pyle.

Sounds too me like who ever wrote this was making shit up.
For instance:
quote:
2."He`d fire M40s into the upper jungle canopy and watch the airburst
shred everything below.Legend had it he would detect the Beebops
by smell and even figger the range from a single sniff..."
That M40 reference doesn't even make sense. Unless they're talking about Jack Bauer! Then it makes perfect sense.

Usually when I heard the term "Bebop" it was in reference to the way Black Marines walked, as in "Beboppin' down the road". Like walking with a Rythm...

Now that makes more sense. Maybe it was written by a Gook and instead of an M40, the goofball was actually using a B-40!

Rick 0311It’s been more than a couple of years but weren’t the HE 40mm grenades numbered in the high 300’s and low 400’s as their M designation?
Don’t remember a round for the M79 bloop guns marked M40??????
You're right. The M-79 fired an HE round that was designated the M-406.

Yup, that's Jack Bauer for you!

invader66isn't the M40 a round for the 203. Seems like
it can be fired or tossed. It did not exist in Nam.
the M40 to me is a sniper rifle and a gas mask.
think what we have here has nothing to do with trees and more to do with what makes them grow.

Gene,
I believe the rounds for the 203 are the same as M79 rounds and have the same M numbers. If I remember the color scheme for HE was green case with a gold tipped green projectile. They had illumination, CS gas, and Buckshot rounds also but can’t remember the color codes or M numbers for those.

That's almost as funny as the blacked out window and candy comment!

Rick 0311One other little tid bit about M79 HE rounds that is important to remember. They are not spin armed so you better be careful of anything they might hit within about the first 50 yards of your position. If you don’t believe me, ask John Kerry!

invader66Aliens???

Gene,
I didn’t really think the Alien’s tits were all that great!

Rick 0311Here’s one, and Gene and malm aren’t allowed to answer.
Where did the names “Jar-Head“ and “Leathernecks†come from?
30 April 2006, 12:14
WhitworthRick, I do believe you are correct in that the M79 and the M203 used basically the same rounds.......Marines back in the old, old, old, Corps used to wear leather collars which actually protected their mellons from being lopped off when boarding hostile ships. It was actually a part of the uniform. I believe that Jar Head was a reference to the bad haircuts we always got stuck with

I always thought the term Jar Head came from that little maneuver the DI's would do when they would grab you by your throat and slam your head into things...

Gene, lets make it clear on what you have. It is an M118 practice round for the M-79, the blue projo being the key to that puzzle.

Wow!What a
Looks like I should have been more informative.
The book I translate is:
"ALIENS-Colonial Marines Technical Manual"
by Lee Brimmicombe-Wood. And YES,it is indeed based on
the 1986 movie "ALIENS" by James Cameron and describes
hypotetical Marines of the future in 22nd/23rd century.
My friend is a fanatic of that movie and asked me for translation.
As to the M40s,if you saw the movie you may remember they were grenades
fired from the grenade launcher part of the Colonial Marines` individual
weapon the 10mm M41A Pulse rifle(Which was actually Thompson M1 with
a sawn-off Remington 870 attached under the barrel, plus half of the
forend from SPAS-12 shotgun. All in nice plastic casing forming magazine
well and a carrying handle)
Now,what does "talking Jack Bauer" mean?
The only Jack Bauer I know is the main character
from the "24" series played by Kiefer Sutherland.

That explains it. Remember writers makes up shit. It doesn't have to be accurate for them to use it.

You are correct, I was referring to the lead character from the hit program "24". What I meant was, if the book were about Jack Bauer and a teasm of Marines, then 'anything' would be possible and then it would ALL make sense.

If you are familiar with the program "24" and the character Jack Bauer, then you will enjoy this.
