I was just getting ready to order a correct grade M1 from the CMP and now I see they are not accepting any orders for them. Do you think they will become avaiable again or was that the last we will see of the correct grade? I wanted the rifle for shooting in the local CMP matches. What would be your suggestions if the correct grade is no longer going to be offered? Service grade or rack grade and fix them up or would they be ready to go as they come from the CMP? Thanks for any input!

Denny,
All the correct grade did was guarantee that the parts would be proper/correct for the era that the rifle was manufactured and for the maker. It did not provide any edge for accuracy. A service grade and some rack grades are as likely to shoot as well or better and it is really a matter of luck of the draw. I would buy a service grade and never look back. Depending on what matches (some allow no modification) you plan to shoot, there are various accurizing tricks you can do to improve the guns performance. The hard core John Grand Match enthusist will have a krieger bbl with a hand fitted new stock, etc, etc. The I wanta have fun guy will buy a M1 and go shoot. I don't know where you fit in this picture, but as you gain experience, you will probably sort it out. In fact buy 2 from the CMP and then you will have one to trick out all the way and one to keep honest with. You can always sell it at a profit later.

Denny,
Please see my "Ruminations" post. I think if you want to shoot matches with your rifle, I'd get the cheapest possible from CMP and send it off for rebuild by fulton or someone else. You'll be money ahead. The voice of experience! Kudude
