I walked into the gun shop yesterday and they had recieved a shippment of 1936 MAS French rifles. I ask the man what kind of deal he had...he said his buyer got a real good deal. I said what is a good deal? He said "for one or a CASE of them"....you know what happened...I walked out dragging a case of french Mas rifles.

What did I do!

......just a guess but I noticed you reside in Tennessee so maybe too much JD? - your post sat here unanswered for two days, I felt like maybe you would feel ignored so I decided "what the hell, shoot him a response" - On a serious note, what is the story on these rifles as I have no knowledge of them - thanks - KMule

Wow, a whole case of them??? I'm guessing I would start labeling them for different days of the week, and then move onto holidays? Must have been a good deal, I have a weakness for relic style rifles too, so I can't say I would have walked away with a full wallet either!

I've actually thought of getting one of those rifles. Once you use one...let us know what you think of them. Also, if you want to sell one (if they are o.k.) I have a C&R so we could legally transfer one. Happy Shooting!!!

This is the rest of the story: The rifles were shipped 5 to a case. The price was 40.00 each. They were shipped with cleaning kit, and new sling, as well as field maneul "in french". The Rifles were coated with 1/4 inch of thick brown greese. I tried every thing to melt the greese. K1 fuel oil worked the best. The rifles take about two hours to clean. Bores have been great. The wood has a few bruses. They are built like a tank.

I looked in an old issue of "Rifle" and found a a great story about the guns. They say they are 7.5 X 54. You can buy brass from Graffs for $26.00 a hundred. Lee makes dies for $22.00.

They 7.5 bore is safe to shoot .30 bullets as groove diameter is .3086. They say the power is about the same as a .308 or 7.62 nato.

One more to clean...I have ordered brass and dies will let you know more when I get them.

I got an unissued unfired '36 MAS for $60 when BIG5 had them on sale a few years ago.

It sits in storage, still unfired.

I wish I sold Microsoft and bought MASs in 2000

Go over to the cast bullet forum and ask about the rifle. They like them for cast bullet shooting

They aren't bad rifles at all. Most of them were only dropped once. Some have a small compartment in the butt stock for storing the white flag. Sorry, but I can't resist taking a shot at the French. Best wishes.

They are in great shape usually. As Cal wrote the rifles have seen little use. It is my belief that they were not made to be shot or for combat, but for parade duty and surrender ceremonies. If they had actually been made to be used they would have a safety, which they don't! This also makes them illegal to hunt with (at least in my state).
