Probably the carbine version of the Czech ZB and Iranian produced 98/29. Pre WWII carbines were designated Model 1930. There were also post war Iranian made carbines called the Model 49. 18" barrels, 7.92mm (8x57) caliber. Very similar in operation and function to the German M98 Mauser.

Just re read your post, if the rifles he spoke of were indeed Mannlicher-Berthiers, they may have been the 1892 carbine or the 1892/1916 carbine. Caliber for both is 8mm Lebel. Not positive, but I don't think the Persians were armed by the French, but could very well have been.

my father passed away nearly 40 years ago . i remember that he told me about large ibex hoards of very big amount roaming mountains like wild cattles and he said they declined in number already long before BRNO was adopted. the berthier did the good job at long range shooting by todays measures these little carbine are barely short range rifles!! they shot them at middle of shoulder with fmj bullets and they dropped dead!!!

A lot of these handy powerful carbines have been converted into hunting carbines, the most common being the Turkish Forestry Service Carbine modified by Orman Arsenal in 1948 in large quantities.

those little carbines are very handy , but that in the auction looks a little bit too worn. it seems the lebel round with pointed D ball had a very sharp radius at nose that made them good att longer range. i have seen only once a lebel round and i recall that these are more pointed than german 198 grain in 8x57 .am i correct about that?
