Boy am I happy. Went to the range yesterday and my M1A1 (loaded) with 6x40 Springfiled scope and TTI Tactical Match 175 grn Sierra HPBT shot several 3 shot groups under a 1/2 inch.

Yep, M1A's are accurate. I've got a Garand that I had a retired Marine Armourer rebarrel for me. It has a Douglass XX airguaged barrel, in 30-06, no scope and will put 5 shot's in less than an inch at 100yds.

Very good indeed, Mike.

I spent my Sunday at the range yesterday, but there were a Muzzleloaders competition. All the lines were occupied [Frown]

Next week I'll use my K31 and my 9.3x62. Unless I have to go for Wildboars.
bye

Mike, Congrats on the 1A! I've got one (also loaded model) and have added only a hooded rear sight and a Turner sling. Great rifle.

My question is about your optics. I've started shooting in the local highpower matches which do not allow any type of scope. However I have a very solid mount that replaces the stripper guide and am looking for a good scope to use for load development and some recreational shooting.

What made you choose that particular scope? Are you happy with it (sounds like you are)? Does it have an adjustable objective? Reticle? Is it a fixed 6X? Overall thoughts?

Again great choice in rifles. I hope one day to add a Garand to my rifle rack...some day.

Cheers,
XWind

xwind,,since you're allready doing hp matches, ask the range master for the dcm paperwork and get your garand that way.Takes some time and running around,,,but worth the effort. The first m14's I ever shot were navy match rifles. After shooting them a few times I decided I really needed one,got an m1a[loaded] from springfield, the thing was so damn clunky in it's function I sent it back with a letter explaning why and what I had been used to shooting.A month later I got it back, with a different barrel and shooting 10 times better than before.

Xwind,

I chose the Springfield Armory 6x40 becuase they ran a promo a $125 if you bought a new gun including the mounts and rings as I recall certainly the mount was included.

It is a fixed objective has the "range finding" reticle. I like the scope nice and clear.

The mount is such I can still use the irons.

Mike, thanks for the feedback on your optics and enjoy that rifle!

Claybuster, I am vaguely aware of the DCM program but as with a good $cope it's a matter of $$$ more than it is procedure. I do appreciate the idea. I'm a bit suprised at the quality issue you had with your M1A. I'm glad you got it squared away and it's doing the job it loves to do. I was sighting mine in at the 600 yard line and let a friend (a relatively new shooter and never imagined shooting 600 yds) fire some rounds downrange while I manned the pits. The old RO was there and noticed my buddy couldn't hit the side of a barn from inside the barn, so as I'm talking to him on the radio trying to correct his shots which were not even on the paper all of a sudden a round comes down and punches the line between the 10 ring and X ring at 9 O'Clock (would have scored as an X). I told him, with amazement in my voice to do whatever it was he just did again. A few more rounds and again they're off the paper.
I surrendered and closed the pits and drove back to the firing line to find out that the RO had grabbed my rifle and layed down on my mat to squeeze off a quick shot (the X) without even bothering with the sling. He told me that he thought it was a fine rifle and was sighted in for 600 yds. I get a lot of compliments on the rifle as it's the only one on the line with a factory laminated stock and is a beautiful rifle. It was a special run, according to Springfield, and the stock number still is not back in their catalog or web site. It's hands down my pride and joy and I love every trip to the range.

Enjoy it all, life's too short!

Cheers,
XWind

Xwind,my garand was $310.00 out the door, via dcm,Granted, that was a few years ago,But I got a bona fide, really nice garand, armory revamped, at below "gun show" prices, with no b/s.And the thing shoots like a cadillac.Dcm garands are worth your while to look into.Clay.P.S. I think I had to pay the state troopers $20.00 for the finger prints, the bank did the notarising for free.Like I said,it takes a bit of running around and time ,but worth the effort.

Thanks ClayBuster, what a great deal! I haven't looked into the DCM M1s yet as things tend to follow me home if I look at them too long. [Big Grin]

It seems I heard someone talking about them being app $600 but I can't be sure.

I think (ouch hurts when I do that) that there are 2 or 3 different classifications of the DCM M1s. Collector Grade at the top and a couple others. I also seem to remember hearing that if you volunteered? or signed up to assemble some rifles that you could hand pick the bits and pieces for the one you're building for yourself. Have you heard of that? Thanks again for the info and as soon as my personal economy starts moving in the right direction again I'll be seriously looking.

Cheers,
XWind

Mike I took advantage of that offer as well. My only complaint was it took them six months to get the scope to me. They came through in the end and were very polite whenever I talked to them but this was the worst service I ever had from Springfield. I guess they were just overwhelmed in the response they got for the offer.

I live about an hour from the range so it is convenient for me to go to the store that they have there now. You never know what they will have in the racks but you do get to sort through them yourself. Otherwise it is the luck of the draw for anything coming from cmp south. Still a good deal though.

Claybuster, No finger prints needed. You have to show current membership in an affiliated club and proof of participation in high power competition.
The exception is for veterans. You dont have to show recent high power competition only your DD214 or whatever they use these days. All of the info is on their web site. There is also a section listing clubs and state organizations you can join to satisfy the requirement. Many of the affiliated oranizations will also run clinics that wil satisfy all the requirements. Here in Ohio the ORPA does a great job of this every year. Check the listing for your state and contact the appropriate people. It is really a very simple process and once threy have you on file all you have to do is show current proof of membership. Also of course pass the required background check. You know that "instant" thing that puts me on delay everytime I buy another rifle.

I'm gonna show my age and tell that I bought one of those $165 DCM guns too. The paperwork has changed over the years but don't do something I did. I was LEO at the time, so I took the fingerprint cards to work and rolled my own prints. The name in each of the boxes on the cards (name of subject, name of official taking prints) were the same, since both were me! Shoulda known better.

Took DCM an additional five months to get THAT unscrewed. Finally got a fine H&R a long time later.
