The local dealer has this neat lookin little carbine. It's a 7.65 argentine mauser, I believe. The stock goes all the way to the end of the barrel. It's a very short little rifle. The metal on the outside is very clear and rust free. The barrel has deep, distinct lands and grooves but the metal is dark, not shiney.

1. He's asking $175. Is that too much?

2. How well do these guns shoot? If it ain't accurate, I would be very dissapointed. I would shoot cast bullets through it and I would want it to hold 2-3" at 100 yards. could I expect that?

Thanks,

Max

This is probably one of the neatest little rifles ever made. I have one and if you don't want the one you've mentioned, please send me a private message cause I'd like another one.

Mine is not particularly accurate because it seems to be over bore or it is shot out. It seems to have rifling, and the bore is shiney, but bullets keyhole at 10 paces. I loaded some .311 bullets (123gr) for my 7.62x39, and it seems to like those. I don't get overly powerful loads, but then I just like to play with it.

I would love to have a hunting rifle built on one of these little jewels. I think you have got a winner. If you don't like it and the metal and wood are in good shape, contact me. Ku-dude

Slug that bore and see what you've got. It's not hard.

I know where one is that they're asking $125.

Its like chrome or nickle plated...and not very well. Made in Germany though, I forget by who. Lowe maybe or something? I held myself back.

Yup, that's it.
Darn. Why did you guys have to tell me all that good stuff about this gun? I'll probably go in there soon and the thing will follow me home. Just what I need.
It's funny how that one gun stood out from that whole rack of old military rifles.
If I decide not to get it I'll e-mail you ku-dude.

And PLEASE don't "build a hunting rifle" out of one of these things. They aren't being made anymore and never will be again. It's a fine hunting rifle as is.

But barrelled actions are available, and that's the way to go if you want to build something. Don't tear up one with a usable stock.

I'd love to find a barreled action. Please share where the "gettin" place is. Ku-dude

PS: I did slug it, and it is .312-313. I use 123 AK/SKS bullets with exposed lead bases and they upset to group satisfactorily in my rife. K-d

www.ezboard.com has a few milsurp forums with more information than you can digest in one sitting. The 1909 was made both in germany and then in argentina proper. The argentine was preceeded by an earlier model in the mauser evolution to the 98 family. There is some confusion about caliber, it being listed as 7.65x54 and 7.65x53 This was pure nomenclature and different measuring, it's the same cartridge for both series. It was mauser's first cartridge in smokeless, and ironically he got the military cartridge right the first time. It's the progenitor for a .308! The carbine unfortunately cannot be fitted as yet with MOJO aftermarket peeps, which can be dropfitted into the ladder site base without modification (and work very well.)I acquired a spare ladder sight and had a big leaf fabricated and then regulated slowly with a file.A spare trigger was stoned for a crisp pull retaining the 2 stage trigger. It made a splendid carry rifle on horseback. When a collector offered me lots of green pieces of paper it took less than an hour to return things to full military. These are a great piece. Some will be seen with muzzle flush with the cap and others with a slight protusion.I've heard two stories: That a false muzzle was added either for bayonet use or to meet some export/import law for barrel length.

I've got a german made one, excellent rifle, only one I've got that is neater is the little 6.5 swede carbine I've got. Mine shoot 310-312 bullets equally well, it will even shoot reasonable groups with 308 bullets in a pinch.

good luck with it.

Graycg
