Like the kind we see on the news in Iraq. I understand that they can stop and AK bullet at point blank range.

And how much do they cost?

They suck. They'll choke you if you have to lean forward. Hard to use issue flashlight as a "rifle stop" when it's over my shoulder on a sling.

they wouldnt stop a direct hit from an ak at 100 yds much less point blank, but if your dead set on one, you might look for a PSAGT vest for sale.

500 grains, from what I have been told by my son who has been shot at by the AK-47, every round is armor piercing, they all have a "dart" on the inside of them. The dart looks like a pencil lead sized rod about 1/2 inch long, and they are hardened. I know this because he carries one of the darts around in his wallet. Something he "picked up" in Afghanistan. So even the military vests won't stop these rounds at point blank ranges. I would doubt that the police vests would either, unless you got the plates and everything else to enhance them. Then who would want to wear that all the time, unless you had to.

Rock, that's a great link.

Mike, thanks for the explanation. I wonder how our military vests did in the field against the Iraqi AK's.

I have no familiarity at all with the vests now being isssued, but when I was in the Army, none of the flak vests would stop a military RIFLE bullet. They did stop pistol rounds and shrapnel from shells, however, and such shell fragments were the main cause of casualties at that time.

500,

There are companies that make body armor, complete with ceramic inserts for high velocity rifle rounds, in the PASGT style.

here is a current issue model for sale . . .

or you might check here . . .

Without the plates, there is nothing "bulletproof" about the new vest. As was mentioned above, they are for stopping shrapnel, not bullets. With the plates in, obviously they are much heavier and not as fun to wear. Regardless of LDO's experience, I gave up my "old style" vest in a HEARTBEAT to get a new style as soon as they came in. Much better product...

Well, yeah, but I'm deployed in the US, to a place where nothing ever happens. If I were in Iraq, you better believe I'd be wearing it with trauma plates and a tanker's spall vest underneath.

Hey, I once had an extra spall vest that I cut up to make kevlar inserts for my boots! I even cut out a few to put in wet weather boots for extra protection against toe poppers. Fortunately, we ended up going to Macedonia to keep the peace instead of Kosovo to fight.

Because during those first two, I'm still able to return fire. If I do my part, I can end it before they realize they need to "move up". Just cause they're shooting doesn't mean I'm done, if a vest does it's job.

But again, unlike police body armor, the military vest is not designed to stop bullets.

Cold Bore,

I do not want to distract from your marksmanship ability or anyone else's, but reports from the field tend to indicate that most people, including police, military and ordinary citizens, have a tough time hitting anything in the heat of a gunfight. I have heard of whole clips being emptied at 20 feet without a round hitting what it was supposed to.

I am curious about how many of the 3rd shot headshots attempted by officers actually hit the head.
