Has anyone had any experience with detachable magazines for the sks? Are they worth the $$$ or should I just stick with the original 10rd. Thanks -ter __________________________ Per Scientia Vox Duty to your country means more than a ribbon magnet on the back of your car.

I've tried several and none have ever worked satisfactorily. I've given them away for others to try, but they wind up giving them back saying they can't get them to feed properly. As a secondary consideration, they make a really nice looking rifle look, well, ugly! Stick to the stripper clips and the 10 round magazine and you'll never have a problem. Good luck either way. I had one and it was "OK" with bulk Wolf ammo. But the "nose" on them makes them impracticle to carry around. I ended up going to an AK for the high cap stuff -- and a drum mag.

Stick with the SKS 10 shot magazine as is. Simply put; it works with no drama. If you want a detachable mag go to an AK design.

Are the detachable magazines inserted into an adapter that replaces the fixed magazine, or do they fill the space taken up by the fixed magazine? Just curious. Those swept in pacivity, not possessing of might, become history's lessons on which one is right.

I have a detachable on one of my SKS's and it works fine. I just use the stripper clips and leave the mag in.

The fixed mag gets removed and replaced by a "high cap" that has a wierd looking nose on it. Mostly the mags are mediocre. If you want "high cap" get an AK. That's the developmental path from the SKS. AK is basically a re-worked SKS with a detachable, high capacity mag.

For what its worth I had pretty good luck with the detachable mags- sort of. I bought one and it didn't fit the rifle or function well at all. But after several hours with a file and a pair of needle-nose pliers modifying the feed llips, follower, and funny mounting piece at the front of the magazine it came in and out of the rifle smoothly and functioned wonderfully. So my advice is if you are willing to put in the effort you can make them work. My real advice is sell the SKS and just buy an AK! Why is violence so widely condemned when it is such a huge part of our cultural heritage?

Not to argue by maybe clarify some things. The SKS and the AK47 come from two entirely different inventors. The AK47 come from Mikhail Kalashnikov and the SKS from Sergei Simonov. The SKS was just a scaled down action taken from Simonov's anti-tank cannon. It's bolt is of the tilted locking style, where as the AK47 has a rotary bolt with front locking lugs. Probaby the most common things they have are they both were chambered for the same round and they both use the gas piston type system. Their may be some similarity in sights and bayonet and attachment. Here's a pretty neat collapsible stock for an SKS http://www.tapco.com/proddesc.aspx?id=9b2c294a-3096-4a80-9cf6-583a4b49a521 I think I'd stick with the original 10 rd magazine too. Joe

Just to agree with the above post... yeah the AK is nothing like the SKS mechanically. Rotating bolt versus tipping bolt. I mean, the general outline is similiar... but even then the resemblance is passing. I like both weapons, but the People's Republic of California does not allow me to get too familiar with an AK.
