I've got a bolt action rifle chambered for it, would like some decent surplus or cheap ammo to shoot in it, something on the order of the Portuguese .308 if such a round exists. Would appreciate some recs. Thanks CAT

You might try Cheetah. It's a few cents per round more than the steel cased stuff, but it is brass.... berdan primed if I remember correctly, non-corrosive. I picked up a good deal on a bunch of Lapua, and it is absolutely lovely stuff... boxer, brass, and very accurate. It's hard to find, though. Don't do much handloading for my SKS.... can't find the brass afterward!

SECOND THAT. 7.62 X 39 Lapua is the cat's ass. Look around for it. It's reasonably priced, and your bolt action will love you for it.

The Cheetah is, I believe, made by Zimbwabwe Defense Ind., ( or something of the sort ) and part of every purchase likely goes into Mugabe's pocket.

Gatogordo, What kind of bolt-gun is it? I am considering a rebarrelling to 7.62X39 too.

The most accurate 7.62x39 that I have shot so far is the Barnaul FMJ. Each rifle will have it's druthers and buy a box or two of each one and try them out. How about the cartridge necked down to 6mm? Seems it made a bit of an impact on the bench circuit....
