I was cleaning up my old (new to me) sling. It's stamped "62 Gliesche Sattlerei Basel". But it's got the inspection stamp of Major Mühlemann (who served as chief inspector from 1913-1941). What does that "62 stand for?

Ray, I think what looks like "Satticrci" is actually "Sattlerei" ("saddlery" in English). "KLOTEN - ZCH" is "Kloten - Zürich".

My best guess is that it is the number assigned to the particular subcontractor. In your case, I think the 44 is the code for the ROB.BERLINGER Sattlerei KLOTEN - ZCH. I don't think there is way to determine the exact year the sling was made. Check the other tip of your sling (smooth side) there should be one of three inspection stamps. Inspector until 1941 Inspector 1941-1946 Inspector post 1946

The sling mystery continues! Today I bought a sling and the inspection stamp is the Swiss cross with "Sz" (abbreviation for "Schweiz")and was made by A. OESCHGER in HORNUSSEN with the number 55.
